Langsam wird es weihnachtlich auf Mauritius. Seit Sonntag ist mein Mann hier. Unsere beiden Töchter kommen auch bald. Wenn dann noch der Weihnachtsmann kommt…?! Am letzten Tag im Norden der Insel gingen wir auf eine Minikreuzfahrt auf einem Katamaran zu den Inseln Ilot Gabriel und Flat island, entlang dem Coin de Mire – eine Felseninsel mit Inselbesuch, Schnorcheln, Mittagessen. Bei der Auswahl war ich sehr wählerisch. Ich hatte irgendwie keine Lust auf  Massentourismus mit 50 Menschen an Bord. Und ich fand einen Anbieter auf http://catamarancruisemauritius.com mit nur ca 22 Teilnehmern.

It’s slowly getting Christmassy in Mauritius. My husband has been here since Sunday. Our two daughters will be here soon. If Father Christmas still comes then…?! On the last day in the north of the island, we went on a mini-cruise on a catamaran to the islands of Ilot Gabriel and Flat island, along the Coin de Mire – a rocky island with island visit, snorkelling, lunch. I was very selective in my choice. I somehow didn’t feel like mass tourism with 50 people on board. And I found a provider on http://catamarancruisemauritius.com with only about 22 participants.

Los ging es in Pereybère am Strand Bain Boeuf, dort wo mich der Strandverkäufer ansprach. Und er erkannte mich sogar wieder, mit Namen. Auf unserem Cruise waren wir zu sechst: eine Mauritierin mit ihrer Nichte aus London, ein Paar aus der Schweiz / Litauen und wir. Also ideal in COVID Zeiten. Wir wurden mit einer Art Selbstbaufloß- Fähre zum Katamaran gebracht und dort vom Skipper und Entertainer begrüßt. Und auf ging es 1 1/2 h bis zu den Inseln Gabriel und Flat island. Es war etwas windig, Wellen recht hoch und der Katamaran schaukelte so, dass man nicht in den vorderen Netzen sitzen konnte. Die wurden nur freigegeben, wenn wir vor Anker gingen. Die Fahrt selbst war ein Genuss: frische Meeresbrise, azurblaues Meer, ein bisschen bedeckt. Segamusik im Hintergrund. Wir versuchten, an der Seite des Bootes zu sitzen, was nicht ganz so gefährlich war, wie vorn in den Netzen. Trotz des Wellenganges wurde uns auch nicht schlecht.

We started in Pereybère at the Bain Boeuf beach, where the beach vendor approached me. And he even recognised me, by name. There were six of us on our cruise: a Mauritian woman with her niece from London, a couple from Switzerland / Lithuania and us. So ideal in COVID times. We were taken to the catamaran by a kind of self-built ferry and welcomed there by the skipper and entertainer. And off we went for 1 1/2 hours to the islands Gabriel and Flat island. It was a bit windy, the waves were quite high and the catamaran was rocking so much that it was impossible to sit in the front nets. They were only released when we dropped anchor. The trip itself was a pleasure: fresh sea breeze, azure sea, a bit overcast. Sega music in the background. We tried to sit on the side of the boat, which was not quite as dangerous as sitting in the nets in front. Despite the waves, we didn’t feel sick either.

Auf der Flat island gegenüber der Gabriel Insel wurden wir an Land gelassen und hatten ca 1 1/2 Stunden Zeit zum schwimmen, baden, schnorcheln, spazierengehen… Letzteres ohne Schuhe war nicht möglich. Die haben wir auf dem Katamaran vergessen. Wie blöd! Aber wir konnten uns die Zeit auch ohne Laufen gut vertreiben. Taucherbrillen und Schnorchel hatten wir dabei. Ich fühlte mich ein kleines bisschen wie in Thailand am Maya beach – voller Boote und Menschen, die auf der kleinen Insel ihren Dreck a luden. Hier in etwa das gleiche Bild: Neben unserem Boot lagen noch ca sechs weitere, größere dort. Am Strand der Insel waren mehr Menschen als am öffentlichen Strand von Mon Choisy.  Hmmm, macht uns ein schlechtes Gewissen, denn das hat nicht viel mit Umweltschutz zu tun. Bei dem Krach dann auch von den Booten reißt jeder Fisch aus. Also mal wieder keine Delfine und Wale. Auf unserer Schnorcheltour sahen wir auch nur vereinzelt ein paar Fischchen. Man musste nur weit genug raus schwimmen. Hier gab es keine Abgrenzung, man konnte so weit man wollte. An Land und auch schon auf dem Wasser entdeckte ich einen sehr exotischen Vogel: sah aus wie eine Möwe, hatte aber einen sehr langen Schwanz. Es handelt sich dabei um den weißschwanzigen tropischen Seevogel. Vielleicht gibt es noch eine deutsche Bezeichnung für diesen, konnte ich aber nicht herausfinden.

On  Flat island opposite Gabriel Island we were let ashore and had about 1 1/2 hours to swim, snorkel, walk…. The latter was not possible without shoes. We forgot them on the catamaran. How stupid! But we were able to pass the time well without walking. We had diving goggles and snorkels with us. I felt a little bit like I was in Thailand on Maya beach full of boats on the shore and people polluting the little spot. Here nearly the same picture: Besides our boat, there were about six other, bigger ones there. There were more people on the beach of the island than on the public beach of Mon Choisy.    Hmmm, makes us feel bad, because that doesn’t have much to do with environmental protection. With the noise then also from the boats, every fish tears out. So once again no dolphins and whales. On our snorkelling tour we only saw a few fish. You only had to swim far enough. There were no boundaries here, you could swim as far as you wanted. On land and already on the water, I discovered a very exotic bird: it looked like a seagull, but had a very long tail. It was the white-tailed tropical seabird. Maybe there is another German name for it, but I couldn’t find it out.

In der Zwischenzeit bereitete die Crew unser Mittagessen vor: Hühnchen, Fisch, Salate, Reis, Gemüse. Es schmeckte allen und wir genossen viel zu viel davon. Müde mit vollen Bäuchen konnten wir endlich in den Netzen hängen.

In the meantime, the crew prepared our lunch: Chicken, fish, salads, rice, vegetables. It was very delicious and we just enjoyed to much of it. Tired with full bellies, we could finally hang in the nets.

Es ging weiter zur nächsten Schorchelrunde am Coin de Mire, an der Felseninsel entlang bis zu einer ruhigen Stelle, wo man gut ins Wasser tauchen konnte. An der Felsenwand nisteten diese Vögel und die Formation der Felsen war wieder sehr beeindruckend und Phantasie weckend.  Die Farben des Wassers verleiteten regelrecht zum Reinspringen. Die Mauritierin zog sich eine Art Neopren über. Sie meinte es wäre zu kalt. Wie!? Gerade richtig, herrlich erfrischend. Ich bekam sogar etwas Gänsehaut, aber nicht von der Kälte. Eine wunderbare Unterwasserwelt offenbarte sich uns. Fischschwärme, bunte, gemusterte, kleine und große Fische. Ich sah sogar zwei Seeaale. Da wir sehr nah am Fels tauchten, musste man sehr aufpassen, dass man nicht von den Wellen an diesen geschleudert wird.

We went on to the next snorkelling round at Coin de Mire, along the rock island to a quiet spot where it was easy to dive into the water. These birds were nesting on the rock face and the formation of the rocks was again very impressive and imagination inspiring. The colours of the water made it tempting to jump in. The Mauritian woman put on some kind of neoprene. She thought it was too cold. How!? Just right, wonderfully refreshing. I even got goosebumps, but not because of the cold. A wonderful underwater world revealed itself to us. Schools of fish, colourful, patterned, small and large. I even saw two conger eels. As we were diving close to the rock, we had to be very careful not to be thrown against it by the waves.

Der Wind wurde stärker. Regen kündigte sich an. Auf der Hauptinsel regnete es bereits schon. Was hatten wir doch wieder für ein Glück!!! Auf den letzten Metern schauerte es, aber im Großen und Ganzen sind wir trocken geblieben.  Der Tag war sehr eindrucksvoll . Ein Highlight bisher. Ich freue mich schon auf den nächsten Cruise, egal welche Tiere wir sehen oder auch nicht zu Gesicht bekommen.

The wind was getting stronger. Rain was on the horizon. It was already raining on the main island. What luck we had again!!! It showered on the last few metres, but on the whole we stayed dry. The day was very impressive. A highlight so far. I am already looking forward to the next cruise, no matter what animals we see or don’t see.
