Die never-ending Story geht weiter. Jetzt wo meine Gang, meine Familie hier ist, sollten wir uns auch in Familie treffen. Ich war so neugierig und aufgeregt, King Karols Familie endlich kennenzulernen, und umgekehrt traf das Gleiche zu. So vereinbarten wir ein gemeinsames Treffen bei den Seetohuls in Port Louis, in ihrem Haus umgeben von Bergen.

The never-ending story continues. Now that my gang, my family is here, we should also meet in family. I was so curious and excited to finally meet King Karol’s family, and vice versa was true. So we agreed to meet together at the Seetohuls‘ house in Port Louis, surrounded by mountains.

Wir wurden so herzlich von Gain, Alti, seiner Frau und Vadisha, seiner reizenden Tochter begrüßt und aufgenommen. Die Aufregung war auf beiden Seiten zu spüren, legte sich nach der Begrüßung. Alti wirbelte durch die Küche, tischte uns ein typisches mauritianisches Gericht auf und ließ vorsichtshalber Chillie weg. Wie rücksichtsvoll. Danke. Scharf ist nämlich nicht so unser Ding. Es gab Daal Puri mit allerlei Curry. Eine Sauce schmeckte besser als die andere. Fisch, Oktopussalat, Reis. Wir lernten, wie man Daal isst, nämlich mit den Fingern. Und Reis kommt da natürlich nicht rein. Wir haben erst einmal alles falsch gemacht. Danke Vadisha für die freundliche Einweisung. Auf dem Tisch stand so viel Essen. Sollte noch jemand kommen? Nein, wir durften einen Teil mitnehmen.

We were greeted and welcomed so warmly by Gain, Alti, his wife and Vadisha, his lovely daughter. The excitement was palpable on both sides, but subsided after the greeting. Alti whirled through the kitchen, dished up a typical Mauritian dish for us and took the precaution of leaving out Chillie. How considerate. Thank you. Spicy is not really our thing. We had daal puri with all kinds of curry. One sauce tasted better than the other. Fish, octopus salad, rice. We learned how to eat daal, namely with our fingers. And rice doesn’t go in there, of course. We did everything wrong at first. Thank you Vadisha for the friendly instruction. There was so much food on the table. Should someone else come? No, we were allowed to take some with us.

Gains Sohn, der in Großbritannien studiert, fehlte am Tisch. Er wurde aber per Videokonferenz zugeschaltet. So waren beide Familien kurzzeitig ganz komplett. Leider konnte er nicht von dem tollen Essen profitieren.

Gain’s son, who is studying in the UK, was absent from the table. But he was connected via video conference. So for a short time, both families were quite complete. Unfortunately, he could not benefit from the great food.

Außer dem Essen tauschten wir uns viel aus: Politik, Bildungssystem, COVID. Die Mädchen, die in einem Alter sind, verstanden sich sehr gut. Die youth culture ähnelt sich doch sehr, auch in tausenden Kilometern Entfernung. Ich bekam noch ein paar Tipps mit für die nächsten Tage, die ich ab dem 2. Januar wieder allein verbringen werde.

Apart from the food, we exchanged a lot: Politics, education system, COVID. The girls, who are the same age, got along very well. The youth culture is very similar, even thousands of kilometres away. I got a few tipps for the next few days, which I will spend alone again from 2 January.

Leider war es etwas verregnet. Wir konnten nicht auf der Dachterrasse sitzen, genossen aber dennoch für ein paar Minuten den Ausblick auf die Hauptstadt. Alles ist in Fußweite, Arbeitsplätze, Schulen, Stadtzentrum, Markt. Am Himmel zogen große Fledermäuse ihre Kreise. Boah, so groß! Das war wie in einem Film.

Unfortunately, it was a bit rainy. We couldn’t sit on the roof terrace, but still enjoyed the view of the capital for a few minutes. Everything is within walking distance, workplaces, schools, city centre, market. In the sky, big bats were circling. Wow, so big! It was like being in a film.

Wir wären gern noch etwas länger geblieben. Aber morgen ist ein normaler Arbeitstag für euch drei. Und wir haben einen Catamarancruise ab 9 Uhr vor. Mit den kulinarischen Gaben im Gepäck machten wir uns auf den Weg nach Tamarin. Ich hoffe, dass es nicht wieder 35 Jahre braucht, sich wiederzusehen. Und hoffentlich entspannt sich COVID bald. Gern begrüßen wir euch, Alti, Gain, Vadisha und Bruder bei uns in Berlin, wenn ihr auf der Durchreise nach UK seid oder zurückkommt. Nochmal ein ganz großes Dankeschön für eure wundervolle Gastfreundschaft. Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt bei euch. Bis bald.

We would have liked to stay a little longer. But tomorrow is a normal working day for the three of you. And we have a catamaran cruise planned from 9 am. With the culinary gifts in our luggage, we set off for Tamarin. I hope it doesn’t take 35 years to meet again. And hopefully COVID will relax soon. We would be happy to welcome you, Alti, Gain, Vadisha and brother to Berlin when you are passing through or returning to / from the UK. Once again, a big thank you for your wonderful hospitality. We felt very comfortable with you. See you soon.
