Heute weiß ich gar nicht so richtig, ob ich schreiben soll oder nicht. Die Nachrichten aus der Ukraine lähmen mich. Ich hatte wie so viele gehofft, dass dieser Krieg nicht ausbricht. Und nun hat Hardliner Putin doch angegriffen. Wohin wird das führen? Wer wird wieder darunter leiden? Ich bin in meinen Gedanken und Gefühlen jetzt bei den Menschen in der Ukraine. Mehr kann man jetzt auch nicht machen. Mein Programm bis zur Abreise von den Seychellen ist vollgepackt. Das kann mir jetzt auch kein Putin mehr nehmen. Ich schreibe einfach mal weiter über den gestrigen Tag am Bacardi-Beach im Kayak.

Today I don’t really know whether I should write or not. The news from Ukraine paralyses me. Like so many, I had hoped that this war would not break out. And now hardliner Putin has attacked after all. Where will this lead? Who will suffer again? My thoughts and feelings are now with the people in Ukraine. That’s all we can do now. My programme is packed until I leave the Seychelles. No Putin can take that away from me now. I’ll just continue writing about yesterday at Bacardi Beach in the kayak.

Ich wollte die Morgensonne und Ruhe am Strand genießen und war bereits eine halbe Stunde vor Treffpunkt dort. Jude, der lead guide, begrüßte mich: ‚Hi good morning, Sylke. You are Supergerman.‘ Nein, ehrlich. Nur weil man etwas früher wach wird und nur mal ne halbe Stunde am Strand sitzen möchte, bevor der Ansturm kommt. Ich glaube, ich habe meinen Ruf weg und muss das wohl aushalten. Leider war nicht viel mit Ruhe, über mir schwebten schon wieder die Drohnen. Ich lerne langsam mehrere Geräusche auszuschalten: Hähnekrähen, Hundegebell und Drohnengesumme. Mir wird definitiv was fehlen, wenn ich wieder zurück bin.

I wanted to enjoy the morning sun and peace on the beach and was already there half an hour before the meeting point. Jude, the lead guide, greeted me: ‚Hi good morning, Sylke. You are Supergerman.‘ No, honestly. Just because you wake up a little earlier and just want to sit on the beach for half an hour before the rush comes. I think I match that stereotype perfectly and have to put up with it. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much peace and quiet, the drones were hovering over me again. I am slowly learning to tune out several noises: Roosters crowing, dogs barking and drones buzzing. I will definitely miss something when I get back.

Das Team von Crystalwater Kayaks (Anis- der Besitzer, Jude, Leo-der Kapitän, und Karl – der Kokosnuss Champion) war bereits fleißig am Organisieren und Vorbereiten der Tour. Die glasklaren Kayaks lagen startbereit, die Teilnehmer aus allen Ländern trafen ein. Team Deutschland wurde vertreten durch Vivienne und mich. Weitere Teams kamen aus USA, Schweden, Rumänien, Polen, Slowenien, Ukraine (!!!!), Portugal. Ca 10 Kayaks gingen an den Start. Unser Guide war Jude, ein Entertainer im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Er wies uns ein auf eine lustige und entspannte Art und sein Team half uns in die Boote. Sie selbst begleiteten uns in einem Schlauchboot und wiesen uns die Richtung. Zuerst hinaus in die Lagune und dann am Strand Anse Source d’Argent entlang, den ganzen Strand im Blick. Was für eine Aussicht! Jetzt kommen die gesamten Felsformationen erst richtig zum Vorschein und man kann auch diverse Figuren erkennen: den Hai, den Kissing Rock, Coco de mer Rock und Elephant Rock. Jude sprang ins Wasser und beschrieb in anschaulicher Art das, was sich da vor uns aufbaute. Und plötzlich schwimmt da eine Riesenschildkröte zwischen den Booten. Was für ein einzigartiger Moment!

The Crystalwater Kayaks team (Anis – the owner, Jude, Leo – the captain, and Karl – the coconut champion) was already busy organising and preparing for the tour. The crystal clear kayaks were ready to go and the participants from all countries arrived. Team Germany was represented by Vivienne and me. Other teams came from USA, Sweden, Romania, Poland, Slovenia, Ukraine (!!!!), Portugal. About 10 kayaks started. Our guide was Jude, an entertainer in the true sense of the word. He showed us the ropes in a funny and relaxed way and his team helped us into the boats. They themselves accompanied us in an inflatable boat and pointed us in the right direction. First out into the lagoon and then along the beach Anse Source d’Argent, with the whole beach in view. What a view! Now all the rock formations really come into view and you can also make out various figures: the shark, Kissing Rock, Coco de mer Rock and Elephant Rock. Jude jumped into the water and vividly described what was building up in front of us. And suddenly there was a giant turtle swimming between the boats. What a unique moment!

Und weiter ging es zum Anse Pierrot, oder auch Robinson Island. Dort soll 1988 der Film Robinson Crusoe entstanden sein. Der Strand sieht auch genauso aus und wir konnten uns an Land davon überzeugen. Jude ließ uns durch die ‚Filmkulissen‘ krabbeln: Höhlen, Dschungel, Pools. Ich kam mir wirklich vor wie im Film. Mal wieder. Und als es dann noch ans Survival Training ging: Wie öffne ich eine Kokosnuss? , kam ich mir wirklich vor wie Robinson. Die Teams mussten gegeneinander antreten und ein Mitglied versuchen, die Kokosnuss zu öffnen. Wir hatten einen Spaß mit einem älteren Herren aus Rumänien, der die Kokosnuss mit dem Kopf öffnen wollte. Für uns ging Vivi an den Start, da ich keine Kraft in den Händen habe und die auch sehr klein sind. Ich würde als Robinson ohne Freitag nicht überleben. Vivi schlug sich recht tapfer und sie bekam die Nuss auch geknackt. Es floß das Kokoswasser heraus.

And then we went on to Anse Pierrot, or Robinson Island. The film Robinson Crusoe is said to have been made there in 1988. The beach looks exactly the same and we were able to see it for ourselves on land. Jude made us crawl through the ‚film sets‘: caves, jungle, pools. I really felt like I was in a film. Again. And when it came to survival training: How do I open a coconut? I really felt like Robinson. The teams had to compete against each other and one member had to try to open the coconut. We had some fun with an elderly gentleman from Romania who tried to open the coconut with his head. Vivi competed for us, as I have no strength in my hands and they are also very small. I would not survive as a Robinson without Friday. Vivi did quite well and got the nut cracked. The coconut water flowed out.

Der Bildungsteil begann. Es ging vor allem um die Korallen, die im El Ninhjo 2016 fast vollständig zerstört wurden. Jude zeigte uns einige Exemplare von solchen und machte darauf aufmerksam, alles dafür zu tun, den Klimawandel aufzuhalten. Eine Kayaktour mit eigener Muskelkraft statt eines Catamarans, der die Riffe zerstört ist schon mal ein Anfang. Es begann der Posing Teil für das Update der sozialen Medien: auf Stein, am Stein, im Stein… Und da das Wasser sich langsam zurückzog, wurde es Zeit, den Rückweg zur Kayakstation anzutreten. Es wurde zu gefährlich und da man nicht riskieren wollte, dass noch mehr Korallen draufgehen, wurden alle Boote in Schlepptau genommen und nach Hause gebracht. Vorsichtig fuhr man über noch ein paar intakte Korallen und erklärte uns diese. Da der Boden durchsichtig war – glassbottom kayaks – konnte man diese sehr gut sehen: Mushroom oder auch Brain Coral, Feuerkoralle und viele kleine Fische. Zum Abschluss gab es noch ein Foto im Kayak mit Anse Source d’Argent im Hintergrund, was Jude übernahm. Danke, Jude für dein Engagement und deinen Enthusiasmus, mit dem du uns durch diesen halben Tag gebracht hast. Ich hatte sehr viel Spaß und war richtig froh, dass du mir diese Tour vorgeschlagen hast.

The education part began. It was mainly about the corals that were almost completely destroyed in El Ninhjo 2016. Jude showed us some specimens of such and pointed out to do everything to stop climate change. A kayak tour with your own muscle power instead of a catamaran that destroys the reefs is already a start. The posing part for the social media update began: next to the  rocks, on the rocks, in the rocks…. And as the water slowly receded, it was time to make our way back to the kayak station. It was getting too dangerous and not wanting to risk killing any more coral, all the boats were taken in tow and brought home. Carefully, they drove over a few intact corals left and explained them to us. As the bottom was transparent – glassbottom kayaks – we could see them very well: Mushroom or Brain Coral, Fire Coral and many small fish. Finally, there was a photo in the kayak with Anse Source d’Argent in the background, which Jude took over. Thank you Jude for your commitment and enthusiasm in getting us through this half day. I had a lot of fun and was really glad that you suggested this tour to me.

Vivienne und ich verbrachten den Rest des Tages am Bacardi Strand. Da sie auch eine Weltreisende ist und sich auch ein Jahr dafür frei genommen hat, gab es viel zu erzählen und auszutauschen. Am folgenden Tag reiste sie leider schon ab nach Praslin. Wir verbrachten den Abend gemeinsam mit noch anderen vielen netten Menschen, die ich an diesem Tag kennenlernen durfte, in der Reggaebar und fuhren in der Dunkelheit ohne Licht am Fahrrad zurück zu unseren Gasthäusern. Zum Glück hatte Vivienne eine Stirnlampe mit. Ich wäre sonst vielleicht im Graben gelandet oder hätte mich wieder verfahren.

Vivienne and I spent the rest of the day at Bacardi Beach. Since she is also a world traveller and has also taken a year off for this, there was a lot to tell and exchange. The following day, she unfortunately left for Praslin. We spent the evening together with many other nice people I had the pleasure of meeting that day in the reggae bar and rode back to our guesthouses in the dark without lights on our bikes. Luckily Vivienne had a headlamp with her. Otherwise I might have ended up in a ditch or got lost again.
