Was ist das jetzt schon wieder? Was ist da schon wieder in mich gefahren? Reicht es nicht langsam? Zwei Tage bleiben mir noch auf meinem Inselsabbatical im Atlantischen Ozean. Ich nutze jede Stunde und Minute. Und jetzt weiß ich auch, wie und vor allem wo man das Azorenhoch finden kann. Ich blieb bei fun-activities.net und probierte zum Schluss aller verrückten Abenteueraktivitäten Coasteering aus.

What is it now? What has gotten into me again? Isn’t it enough? I have two days left on my island sabbatical in the Atlantic Ocean. I use every hour and minute. And now I know how and where to find the Azores High. I stayed at fun-activities.net and tried coasteering at the end of all the crazy adventure activities.

Was versteht man darunter? Vorgestellt habe ich mir das so: ca. 75 % an der Küste entlang klettern bzw. wandern, bisschen schwimmen, springen, schnorcheln. Aber es kam ganz anders: 75 % schwimmen, 10 % auf Felsen hinaufklettern, 10 % wieder hinunterspringen, 5 % schnorcheln. Ich kann schwimmen, aber Klettern macht mir mehr Spaß, Der Nervenkitzel ist dabei einfach höher. Aber lasst euch überraschen.

What do you mean by that? I imagined it like this: about 75% climbing or hiking along the coast, a little swimming, jumping, snorkeling. But it turned out quite differently: 75% swimming, 10% climbing up rocks, 10% jumping back down, 5% snorkeling. I can swim, but climbing is more fun, the thrill is just higher. But let me surprise you.

Ich war überrascht und froh, bekannte Gesichter vom Kayaking und Canyoning wiederzutreffen: Ricardo, der Guide und mein ‚Kayakpartner‘ und Joao vom Canyoning waren mit dabei. Und sie brachten den Praktikanten Deugo mit, der für die Fotos verantwortlich war und somit hatten wir drei (Elisa, ihr Mann und ich) eine 1:1 Betreuung. Wobei zum Teil bekam ich gefühlt eine 3:1 Betreuung, da ich scheinbar das älteste und schwächste Glied in der Kette war. Und es war gut, dass die drei mich schon kannten.

I was surprised and happy to meet familiar faces from kayaking and canyoning again: Ricardo, the guide and my ‚kayaking partner‘ and Joao from canyoning were with us. And they brought the intern Deugo who was responsible for the photos and so the three of us (Elisa, her husband and me) had a 1:1 supervision. Whereas partly I got a 3:1 care, because I was apparently the oldest and weakest link in the chain. And it was good that the three of them already knew me.

Wir mussten aufgrund der hohen Wellen und Strömung den Ort wechseln und fanden uns am Treffpunkt in Caloura wieder. Dort wurde gerade eine Netflix-Serie gedreht. Da ich wieder die Erste am Treffpunkt war, bekam ich die Informationen aus erster Hand von einem der Filmleute. Cool, vielleicht mit uns als Statisten? Nee, wir passten in unserem Outfit nicht in die Requisite: Neopren, Helm, etc.

We had to change the place because of the high waves and current and found ourselves at the meeting point in Caloura. A Netflix series was just being filmed there. Since I was again the first at the meeting point, I got the information first hand from one of the film people. Cool, maybe with us as extras? Nah, we didn’t fit in our outfit in the prop room: Neoprene, helmet, etc.

Und es fing gut an: mit einem Sprung ins kalte Wasser und Schwimmen bis zur Küste, auf den Felsen klettern und wieder runterspringen. Zwischendurch ein paar Spielchen im Wasser, um auszutesten, was geht und um sich an die Ausrüstung zu gewöhnen. Es war nicht so einfach, in voller Ausrüstung zu schwimmen. Jedoch fühlte ich mich in dem Anzug recht warm und geschützt, denn an der Küste gab es gerade eine Invasion von Portugiesischen Galeren (Quallen). Und die Schwimmweste half, oben zu bleiben.

And it started well: with a jump into the cold water and swim to the shore, climb on the rock and jump down again. In between a few games in the water to test out what works and to get used to the equipment. It was not so easy to swim in full gear. However, I felt quite warm and protected in the suit because there was just an invasion of Portuguese men at War (jellyfish) on the coast. And the life jacket helped to stay on top.

Die Sprünge von den Felsen wurden immer gewagter. Ich schaffte es jedoch nicht, mit dem Kopf voran ins Wasser zu springen. So sahen Superman und Pinguin bei mir etwas behindert aus. Und dann wurde es immer höher. Mir stockte der Atem. Also Abseilen geht ja noch, Runterspringen – davor hatte ich tatsächlich mal Respekt. Die drei Guides redeten mir zu. Ricardo erinnerte mich daran, wie es denn aussehen würde, wenn ich davon nicht berichten könnte. Selbst Deugo, der Praktikant hob die Daumen: Come on. You can do it. You are so brave. Ich bin gesprungen, teils weil ich die drei nicht enttäuschen wollte, und natürlich um mich selbst nicht zu enttäuschen. Aber für kurze Zeit habe ich tatsächlich angefangen nachzudenken, was man in solchen Situationen nicht tun sollte. Und wie hat es sich angefühlt? Ich brauche es nicht beschreiben. Als ich unten war – Freudenschrei und Quiiiek! Doch was sollte das?! Deugo, ging eine Etage tiefer und sprang von dort. Wie??? Mich anfeuern und selbst den Schwanz einziehen?

The jumps from the rocks became more and more daring. However, I did not manage to jump head first into the water. So Superman and Penguin looked a bit handicapped on me. And then it got higher and higher. My breath was taken away. So rappelling is still possible, but jumping down – I actually had some respect for that. The three guides talked me through it. Ricardo reminded me what it would look like if I couldn’t report on it. Even Deugo, the intern, gave me the thumbs up: „Come on. You can do it. You are so brave.‘ I jumped, partly because I didn’t want to disappoint the three of them, and of course not to disappoint myself. But for a short time, I actually started thinking about what not to do in these situations. And how did it feel? I don’t need to describe it. When I was down – shout of joy and quiiiek! But what was that about! Deugo, went down one floor and jumped from there. What?? Cheer me on and tuck tail himself?

Es sollte einen noch höheren Felsen hinuntergehen – 11 m. Aber die Portugiesischen Galeren ließen uns nicht. Eine ganze Armee schwamm direkt an der Eintauchstelle. Ich glaube, ich war ein bisschen froh, dass das ausfiel. Weil ich mich nicht getraut hätte, oder etwas hätte passieren können? Ich weiß es nicht, und will es auch nicht herausfinden.

It was supposed to go down an even higher rock – 11 m. But the Portuguese men at War would not let us. A whole army swam right at the dipping point. I think I was a little glad that this was cancelled. Because I wouldn’t have dared, or something could have happened? I don’t know, and I don’t want to find out.

Wir schwammen die ganze Strecke zurück, genossen die Sicht auf die Felsenküste vom Wasser aus und schnorchelten ein paar Minuten an einer etwas ruhigeren Stelle. Im Vergleich zum Indischen Ozean sah ich nicht viel. Es kam mir viel dunkler vor. Aber das lag bestimmt auch daran, dass die Sonne nicht schien, der Atlantik viel kühler und an der Stelle viel tiefer ist. Ein paar Krabben, Seeigel und kleine Fischchen sahen wir dennoch.

We swam all the way back, enjoying the view of the rocky coastline from the water, and snorkeled for a few minutes at a slightly calmer spot. Compared to the Indian Ocean, I didn’t see much. It seemed much darker to me. But I’m sure that was because the sun wasn’t shining, the Atlantic Ocean is much cooler and much deeper at that spot. Nevertheless, we saw a few crabs, sea urchins and small fish.

Etwas nehme ich mit aus dieser Aktion: Ich weiß, wie ich mich von Wellen und Strömung an eine sichere Stelle treiben lassen kann, wie ich das Wasser für mich arbeiten lassen kann ohne dagegen anzukämpfen. Und natürlich Mut!!! Ich bin gesprungen. Es fühlte sich großartig an.

Something I take with me from this action: I know how I can let myself be driven by waves and current to a safe place, how I can let the water work for me without fighting against it. And of course courage!!! I jumped. It felt great.

Joao fragte mich am Ende, was ich mehr mag: Canyoning oder Coasteering. Definitiv Canyoning! Da ist man einfach mehr auf den Beinen und weniger im Wasser.

Joao asked me at the end what I like more: canyoning or coasteering. Definitely canyoning! You are simply more on your feet and less in the water.
