Nach Salzburg und einer wahnsinnig anstrengenden letzten Arbeitswoche bin ich nun wieder im Schnee. Geplant zusammen mit Heidrun. Uns zieht es immer wieder in die Berge. Nur diesmal nicht zum Wanderurlaub, sondern auf die Bretter, in den Schnee. Gebucht Anfang Dezember. Heidrun kümmerte sich um die Unterkunft, ich um die Anreise per Bahn und Mietwagen. Erstes Problem: Anfang Dezember gab es für den ICE, den wir nach München nehmen wollten, keine Platzkartenreservierung mehr. Weder hin noch zurück. Umbuchen konnten wir auch nicht, da wir Zugpreisbindung hatten.

After Salzburg and an insanely exhausting last week at work, I am now back in the snow. Planned together with Heidrun. We are always drawn  to the mountains. Only this time not for a hiking holiday, but on the boards, in the snow. Booked at the beginning of December. Heidrun took care of the accommodation, I took care of the journey by train and rental car. First problem: at the beginning of December, there were no more seat reservations for the ICE train we wanted to take to Munich. Neither there nor back. We couldn’t change our reservations either, because the train fares were fixed.

Was tun? Von Berlin bis München stehen? Oder auf dem Boden sitzen? Ich fuhr in aller Frühe nicht zum Hauptbahnhof, sondern zum Bahnhof Gesundbrunnen. Dort wurde der Zug eingesetzt. 10 Minuten hatte ich Zeit, die Waggons nach freien bzw. unreservierten Plätzen abzugrasen. Es war fast aussichtslos. Ich setzte mich auf zwei Plätze: gegebenenfalls reserviert. Mal schauen. Heidrun stieg am Hauptbahnhof zu. Der Zug fuhr pünktlich ab. Ich konnte mich nicht online einchecken. Die anderen ‚gegebenenfalls reservierten‘ Plätze fielen nach und nach Reservierungen zu. D.h. Menschen vertrieben Menschen von ihren Plätzen. Und so traf es auch uns. An der Haltestelle Südkreuz durften auch wir unsere 7 Sachen wieder zusammenpacken und die beiden hart erkämpften Plätze einer Familie überlassen. Wohin jetzt? Zum Bordbistro durchkämpfen? Aber im gleichen Wagen waren plötzlich doch noch Plätze frei. Reserviert und nicht in Anspruch genommen. Dann gehören die uns jetzt. Ich konnte mich bis München online einchecken. Der Urlaub kann beginnen. Wir müssen nicht über 4 h lang stehen oder auf dem Boden sitzen.

Do what? Stand from Berlin to Munich? Or sit on the floor? I didn’t go to the main station early in the morning, but to Gesundbrunnen station. That’s where the train was boarding. I had 10 minutes to scan the carriages for free or unreserved seats. It was almost hopeless. I sat down on two seats: reserved if necessary. Let’s see. Heidrun got on at the main station. The train left on time. I couldn’t check in online. The other ‚possibly reserved‘ seats gradually fell to reservations. I.e. people drove people away from their seats. And so it happened to us. At the Südkreuz stop, we were also allowed to pack up our 7 things again and leave the two hard-won seats to a family. Where to now? Fight our way to the on-board bistro? But suddenly there were still seats available in the same carriage. Reserved and not used. So they’re ours now. I was able to check in online until Munich. The holiday can begin. We don’t have to stand or sit on the floor for over 4 hours.

Ich brauche jetzt einen Kaffee. Am Bordbistro stand eine beachtliche Schlange. Alle wollten Kaffee. Der Automat ging nicht. Man brühte den Kaffee auf. Und so wie er fertig war, war er auch gleich verkauft. Ich geduldete mich. Und vor mir wurden sämtliche Croissants aufgekauft. Was bleibt uns da noch? Ein Kaffee, auf den ich bestimmt eine halbe Stunde warten musste. Und wir waren noch nicht einmal in Leipzig. Aber der Zug war pünktlich. Ankunft in München: 11.02 Uhr. Die Massen strömten mit ihren Skiern und Gepäck zu den nächsten Zügen in Richtung Salzburg, Innsbruck etc. Wir zogen in Richtung S-Bahn und fuhren nach Laim. Autovermietung. Wir waren allerdings viel zu früh da. Unser Mietwagen war noch gar nicht vorrätig. Wer ahnt denn auch, dass die DB pünktlich ankommt. Am ersten Ferientag in einem überfüllten ICE und einem Bordbistro, dessen Mitarbeiter völlig überfordert waren, dass sie sich mittendrin krank meldeten. Ehrlich. Das Bordbistro wurde wenige Minuten nachdem ich einen lauwarmen Kaffee ergatterte, geschlossen. Angeblich wegen Personalmangel. DB- du bist immer eine Geschichte wert.

I need a coffee now. There was a considerable queue at the on-board bistro. Everyone wanted coffee. The machine didn’t work. They brewed the coffee. And as soon as it was ready, it was sold. I was patient. And before me, all the croissants were bought up. What were we left with? A coffee that I have had to wait half an hour for. And we weren’t even in Leipzig yet. But the train was on time. Arrival in Munich: 11.02 am. The masses flocked with their skis and luggage to the next trains in the direction of Salzburg, Innsbruck, etc. We moved in the direction of the S-Bahn and went to Laim. Car rental. However, we were there far too early. Our rental car was not even in stock yet. Who knew that the DB would arrive on time. On the first day of the holidays in an overcrowded ICE and an on-board bistro whose staff were completely overwhelmed that they called in sick in the middle of it. Honestly. The on-board bistro was closed a few minutes after I got hold of a lukewarm coffee. Allegedly because of a lack of staff. DB – you’re always worth a story.

Wir haben eine halbe Stunde in der Sixt Autovermietung gewartet. Der Corsa, der für uns bestimmt war, kam nicht zurück. Das bedeutete: UPGRADE. Von Corsa auf Sharan. Da sind Welten dazwischen. Das muss ich erstmal verdauen. Und Automatik. Noch ein kleiner Schock. Ein nagelneuer Sharan, der noch nicht einmal 5000 km runter hatte. Für eine Reinigung war nur keine Zeit. Wir saßen ein paar Minuten im Wagen bevor es losging. Ich musste das erstmal alles studieren und brauchte hierfür meine Zeit. Tief durchatmen! Wird schon alles schiefgehen. Eins – zwei drei, Zündung an. Schaltung auf Drive (musste zum Glück nicht rückwärts aus der Parklücke fahren), Und es fuhr sich fast von selbst.

We waited half an hour at the Sixt car rental. The Corsa that was meant for us did not come back. That meant: UPGRADE. From Corsa to Sharan. There are worlds in between. I have to digest that first. And automatic transmission. Another small shock. A brand-new Sharan with less than 5,000 km on the clock. There just wasn’t time to clean it. We sat in the car for a few minutes before we started. I had to study everything first and needed my time for that. Take a deep breath! It will all go wrong. One – two three, ignition on. Shift into drive (luckily I didn’t have to reverse out of the parking space), and it almost drove itself.

Mautfrei ging es über die Autobahn bis ins Skigebiet. Nach 2 1/2 h kamen wir ohne Beulen im Montafon an, erkundeten die Lage, bevor wir im Hotel Explorer eincheckten. Wir benötigen noch Ski und Skistiefel, die wir uns bei Ingo ausliehen. Ein drahtiges Männchen, den wir kaum verstanden, der aber sein Handwerk drauf hatte. Ich bekam ein Paar nagelneue Voelkl Ski – passend zur Skijacke. 

Toll-free, we took the motorway to the ski resort. After 2 1/2 h we arrived in Montafon without any bumps, explored the location before checking into the Hotel Explorer. We still need skis and ski boots, which we borrowed from Ingo. A wiry male who we barely understood, but who knew his stuff. I got a pair of brand new Voelkl skis – to match the ski jacket.

Wenig später eingecheckt im Explorerhotel. Ein Sporthotel. Mit Sauna. Sofort ausprobiert. Wir hatten überhaupt kein Zeitgefühl mehr. So früh raus, die lange Fahrt… Es hätte Mitternacht sein können. Es war noch nicht mal 20 Uhr. Noch nen Drink an der Bar und danach ging nichts mehr.

A little later we checked into the Explorer Hotel. A sports hotel. With a spa. Tried it out immediately. We had no sense of time at all. Out so early, the long drive… It could have been midnight. It wasn’t even 8 pm. Another drink at the bar and then nothing worked.

Der Urlaub kann beginnen, weit weg vom Stress. Die gute klare Luft lässt uns herunterkommen. Heidrun, als Sport- und Skilehrerin, darf zum ersten Mal Skiurlaub genießen und muss sich nicht um die Belange der Skischüler kümmern. Und sie muss sich auch nicht um mich kümmern. Ich werde mir ganz große Mühe geben, verletzungsfrei durch die Woche zu kommen.

The holiday can begin, far away from the stress. The good clear air lets us come down. Heidrun, as a sports and ski instructor, gets to enjoy a ski holiday for the first time and doesn’t have to worry about the needs of the ski students. And she doesn’t have to worry about me either. I will try very hard to get through the week without any injuries.
