Auch das gehört dazu, zu einer Reise in Kanadas Rocky Mountains – White water rafting – eine Schlauchboottour den wilden Fluss hinab, über diverse Stromschnellen, Steine, Felsen. Man wird richtig nass und quiekt vor Aufregung.

This is also part of a trip to Canada’s Rocky Mountains – white water rafting – an inflatable boat tour down a wild river, over various rapids, stones and rocks. You get really wet and squeal with excitement.

Wir buchten eine solche Tour für den Samstag am Kananaski River südlich von Canmore. Wir füllten sämtliche Verzichtserklärungen aus, packten erneut unsere Badesachen und Handtuch ein, denn heute kommen wir nicht drumherum. Heute werden wir nass gemacht.

We booked such a tour for Saturday at the Kananaski River south of Canmore. We filled out all the waivers, packed our swimsuits and towel again, because today we can’t avoid it. Today we are going to get wet.

Am Anfang sah es so aus, als ob man ohne uns den Fluss erobert. Wir fanden den Treffpunkt einfach nicht. Plötzlich standen wir vor einem Schild ‚No Trespassing‘ (Nicht betreten!) . Ja, und  jetzt? Heidrun rief zweimal den Veranstalter an, der natürlich nicht wusste, wo wir steckten und uns demzufolge keine Anweisungen geben konnte. Und wir wussten es auch nicht und das Netz versagte. Googlemaps erzählt uns nur Blödsinn. Mein Gefühl sagte mir, wir haben die Einfahrt verpasst und ich fuhr uns wieder zurück. Und tatsächlich – ein riesengroßes Hinweisschild zum Chinook Rafting. Haben wir gepennt?

At the beginning it looked like they were going to conquer the river without us. We just couldn’t find the meeting point. Suddenly we were standing in front of a sign ‚No Trespassing‘ . Yes, and now? Heidrun called the organiser twice, who of course didn’t know where we were and therefore couldn’t give us any instructions. And we didn’t know either and the network failed. Googlemaps just tells us nonsense. My gut told me we had missed the entrance and I drove us back. Sure enough – a huge sign for Chinook Rafting. Were we asleep?

Wir waren wohl die Letzten, die eincheckten. Die erste Gruppe erhielt schon Instruktionen. Geschafft! Nicht zu spät! Wir hätten uns tierisch geärgert, wenn wir das verpasst hätten.

We were probably the last to check in. The first group already received instructions. We made it! Not too late! We would have been so annoyed if we had missed it.

Das Gelände der Rafting Gesellschaft war voller Menschen. Gelbe Schulbusse standen bereit. Die sollten uns zum Startpunkt der Tour bringen. In jeder Großgruppe waren an die 60 Menschen. Die erste Gruppe zog sich schon die Neoprenanzüge usw an, dann wurden wir instruiert: Schuhe, Neopren fassen. Umziehen. Helm und Rettungsweste holen, Autoschlüssel abgeben. Du meine Güte! Die Schlüssel sahen alle gleich aus. Wie sollen wir da je unseren wieder herausfinden?!

The rafting company grounds were full of people. Yellow school buses were waiting. They were supposed to take us to the starting point of the tour. There were about 60 people in each large group. The first group was already putting on the wetsuits etc., then we were instructed: shoes, grab a wetsuit. Change clothes. Get helmet and life jacket, hand over car keys. Oh my goodness! The keys all looked the same. How are we ever going to find ours again!

Es war sehr warm. Und im Neopren floss das Wasser nur so. Im Bus bekamen wir die nächste Anweisung: Wie ist Helm aufzusetzen, wo muss man an der Weste ziehen, damit sie richtig sitzt. Kaum am Ausgangspunkt angekommen, wurde das noch mal überprüft und bei fast allen Frauen noch einmal nachjustieren. Aua, ich hab doch schon kaum Brust!!! Und wo stecke ich dann meine Gopro hin. Ich bekomme kaum Luft. Und dann noch diese Hitze.

It was very warm. And the water was flowing in the wetsuit. On the bus we got the next instruction: how to put on the helmet, where to pull on the waistcoat to make it fit properly. As soon as we arrived at the starting point, we checked again and almost all the women had to readjust their helmets. Ouch, I hardly have any chest!!! And then where do I put my Gopro. I can hardly breathe. And then there’s this heat.

Dann ging der Run auf die Gruppen los. Das überaus freundliche und kompetente Personal wusste aber, wie man das am besten kanalisiert. Wir landeten in einer 10er Gruppe mit einer französischen und einer Schweizer Familie zusammen – das europäische Boot. Unser Guide war Shaun aus Australien. Überhaupt war das Team dort sehr international gemischt: aus Holland, Irland, unter anderem. Zu Beginn wurden die Befehle geübt. Paddle forward, Paddle backward, Lean in, Get in. Und dann ging die Post ab. Gleich zu Beginn war die Strömung etwas schnell. Ein Manöver nach dem anderen. Und alle sind heil geblieben. Ich hatte es mir schwieriger vorgestellt. Das Paddeln ging ziemlich einfach. Wahrscheinlich lag es auch an der Sitzposition. Heidrun und ich saßen ganz hinten. Wenn dann wurden nur unsere Beine nass. Die beiden kleinen Kinder, die ganz vorn saßen, bekamen eine Welle nach der anderen ab. Aber denen ging es gut. Sie hatten ihren Spaß.

Then the run on the groups started. But the extremely friendly and competent staff knew how best to channel this. We ended up in a group of 10 with a French and a Swiss family together – the European raft. Our guide was Shaun from Australia. In general, the team there was very internationally mixed: from Holland, Ireland, among others. At the beginning we practised the commands. Paddle forward, paddle backward, lean in, get in. And then the action started. Right at the beginning, the current was a bit fast. One manoeuvre after the other. And everyone stayed in one piece. I had imagined it to be more difficult. Paddling was pretty easy. It was probably also due to the sitting position. Heidrun and I sat at the very back. If anything, only our legs got wet. The two little kids sitting in the front got one wave after the other. But they were fine. They had fun.

Wir durchquerten auch eine Kanuslalomstrecke. Nur haben wir die Tore nicht alle getroffen. Punktabzug. Der kritische Teil war jedoch nur in der ersten Hälfte. Die zweite Hälfte war dann ’scenic‘ – zum ausruhen. Ab und an durften wir paddeln. Oder die Boote attackierten sich gegenseitig und bespritzten sich mit Wasser. Wir genossen es.

We also crossed a canoe slalom course. Only we didn’t hit all the gates. Point deduction. However, the critical part was only in the first half. The second half was then ’scenic‘ – for resting. Every now and then we were allowed to paddle. Or the boats attacked each other and splashed each other with water. We enjoyed it.

Shaun fragte uns aus: woher kommt ihr genau, wie lange bleibt ihr in Kanada, was habt ihr bisher alles gesehen, … So verging die Zeit. Small talk beim Rafting. Am Uferrand saßen ein paar Leute im Wasser und tranken Bier. Ist es doch nicht so kalt? Am Ende wurden wir gefragt, wer Lust auf eine Runde Schwimmen hat. Ohne Nachzudenken sprang ich rein ins glasklare, kalte Wasser. Huuuhhhh!!! Was ist das denn? 6-10 Grad? Ohne Neopren – keine Chance. Aber wie kommen wir wieder rein ins Boot. Ich habe nicht die Kraft, von allein wieder hineinzuklettern. Shaun zog uns rein. Ich möchte nicht wissen, wie das aussah. Ich fühlte mich wie ein nasser Sack.

Shaun asked us: where exactly do you come from, how long will you stay in Canada, what have you seen so far? And so the time passed. Small talk while rafting. A few people were sitting in the water at the edge of the river and drinking beer. It’s not so cold after all? At the end we were asked who wanted to go for a swim. Without thinking, I jumped into the crystal-clear, cold water. Whoohhh!!! What is that? 6-10 degrees? Without neoprene – no chance. But how do we get back into the boat? I don’t have the strength to climb back in on my own. Shaun pulled us in. I don’t want to know what that looked like. I felt like a wet sack.

An der Stelle war die 10 km lange Tour über den Kananaski River beendet. Wir waren tatsächlich 1 1/2 Stunden auf dem Wasser. Das Boot musste noch aus dem Wasser und auf den Trailer gehievt werden. Dann ging es zurück zum Basecamp per Schulbus. Und auch im Schulbus eine weitere Einweisung, was wir wie ausziehen und wo hinbringen sollen. Und das wurde nochmals wiederholt für alle. Nur gut, denn Shauns australischer Akzent war nicht immer verständlich. Zum Abschluss gab es Kakao und einen Snack. Wir verabschiedeten uns. Shaun erklärte uns noch, wie wir zu den Bildern kommen. Ich war ganz froh, dass ich die Gopro mit dabei hatte. Sonst würde es hier keine Bilder geben.

At this point, the 10 km tour across the Kananaski River was finished. We were actually on the water for 1 1/2 hours. The boat still had to be hoisted out of the water and onto the trailer. Then it was back to base camp by school bus. And also on the school bus another briefing on what we should take off and how and where. And this was repeated again for everyone. Only good, because Shaun’s Australian accent was not always understandable. At the end we had cocoa and a snack. We said goodbye. Shaun explained how to get to the pictures. I was glad I had the Gopro with me. Otherwise there would be no pictures here.

Wieder ein verrücktes Abenteuer à la Sylke. Ich hatte das nicht auf meiner Bucketlist stehen. Doch ich komme einer Sache immer näher: Paragliding. Irgendwann klappt das. Hier in Kanada mit Sicherheit nicht.

Another crazy adventure à la Sylke. I didn’t have this on my bucket list. But I’m getting closer and closer to one thing: paragliding. Someday it will work out. Not here in Canada for sure.
