Habe lange nichts mehr von mir hören lassen. Weil zu faul? Weil die Schule mich auffrisst? Weil ich immer noch fünf Wochen Kanada verarbeiten muss? Weder noch. Fünf Wochen Schule fühlen sich zwar schon wieder wie 5 Monate an, und bisher hatte ich auch noch kein Wochenende zum Durchatmen.

Haven’t heard from me in a long time? Because too lazy? Because school is eating me up? Because I still have five weeks of Canada to process? Neither. Five weeks of school already feels like five months again, and so far I haven’t had a weekend to breathe.

Nach meiner Reise durch Kanada und kaum Bewegung muss ich etwas für meine Form tun. Wir kauften uns ein Kayak zum Aufpumpen und schenkten es uns gegenseitig zu unseren Geburtstagen. Eins das nach dem Prinzip Drop Stitch, ähnlich wie ein SUP funktioniert. Obwohl schon September, der Sommer scheint nicht aufhören zu wollen und beschenkte uns mit sonnigen Wochenenden, die wir in unserem neuen Kayak nutzen konnten.

After my trip through Canada and hardly any exercise, I need to do something for my shape. We bought a kayak to inflate and gave it to each other for our birthdays. One that works on the drop stitch principle, similar to a SUP. Although it’s already September, the summer doesn’t seem to want to stop and gifted us with sunny weekends that we made the most of in our new kayak.

Die Taufe fand in den Feldberger Seen statt. Mit Auto bis fast an den See. 1 km zu Fuß, mit dem Kayak auf dem Rücken. Aufbau dauerte ca 10 min. Es war so herrliches Wetter. Das Wasser vom Schmalen Luzin lud zum Bade ein. Ein letztes Mal in diesem Sommer? Wer weiß… Hier scheint das Klima völlig aus den Fugen geraten zu sein.

The baptism took place in the Feldberg lakes. By car almost to the lake. 1 km on foot, with the kayak on the back. It took about 10 minutes to set up. The weather was so beautiful. The water of the Schmaler Luzin was inviting for a swim. One last time this summer? Who knows… The climate here seems to be completely out of joint.

Etwas wackelig, unsere Neuanschaffung. Körperbeherrschung ist gefragt. So einfach mal umdrehen und den Picknickkorb aus dem Heck angeln..? Wenn man nicht mit samt dem Picknickkorb baden gehen will, sollte man das vermeiden. Aber Tomahawkkayaks haben auch einen Vorteil. Man ist recht schnell unterwegs, weil viel leichter als ein aus dem Ganzen gegossenes Plasteboot. Prüfung bestanden.

A bit wobbly, our new acquisition. Body control is required. Just turn around and fish the picnic basket out of the stern? If you don’t want to go swimming with the picnic basket, you should avoid that. But tomahawk kayaks also have an advantage. You can go quite fast because it is much lighter than a plastic boat cast from the whole. Test passed.

Und gleich das darauffolgende Wochenende ging es noch einmal aufs Wasser. Diesmal in der Nähe, auf der Mügelspree zum Dämeritzsee bei Erkner. Etwas anstrengend mit all den Motorbooten und Ausflugsdampfern, die so gar keine Rücksicht auf uns nahmen. Die Wellen wurden immer größer. Einmal nicht aufgepasst, hat man einen nassen Popo. Und wieder war es ein ungewöhnlich warmes Wochenende.

And the very next weekend we went out on the water again. This time nearby, on the Mügelspree to the lake Dämeritzsee near Erkner. A bit exhausting with all the motorboats and excursion steamers that showed no consideration for us. The waves were getting bigger and bigger. Once you’re not careful, you get a wet bottom. And again it was an unusually warm weekend.

Wochenende Nr. 3 per Fahrrad nach Bad Düben. Nicht mehr ganz so warm, aber immer noch sonnig. Ich fahre mit dem Deutschland Ticket von Berlin nach Bitterfeld mit einem Umstieg von  4 Minuten in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Hammerstress! Jedes Mal! Aber jedes Mal schaffe ich den Anschluss, weil die Züge warten, bis der Letzte eingestiegen ist. Das Fahrgastaufkommen ist sehr hoch in den Regionalbahnen seit dem es das Deutschlandticket gibt.

Weekend No. 3 by bike to Bad Düben. No longer quite so warm, but still sunny. I take the Deutschland Ticket from Berlin to Bitterfeld with a 4-minute change in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Hammer stress! Every time! But every time I make the connection because the trains wait until the last person has boarded. The passenger volume is very high on the regional trains since the introduction of the Deutschlandticket.

Mein Vater kommt mir mit seinem E-bike von Bad Düben entgegen. Meist treffen wir uns am ehemaligen Goitzsche-Tagebau, der heute ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel ist. Unglaublich, wie sich das verändert hat. Ich habe noch die triste Mondlandschaft vor meinen Augen, die mir brannten von den Industrieabgasen. Und heute? Strand, im Wasser planschende Kinder, Surfer, SUPs, Segelboote. Ich werde auch wieder nach Bitterfeld zurückgebracht, nachdem ich mich von meinen Eltern verwöhnen lassen habe. Ein Radweg geht um die Goitzsche bis nach Pouch, dann entlang der Mulde bis zum Alaunwerk in Bad Düben. Man wird richtig gefordert. Es geht bergauf und bergab. Ich kenne die Strecke nun schon auswendig und zähle zwischendurch die Hügel, die ich mich hinaufquäle im ersten Gang. Bis es nicht mehr geht und ich dann doch absteigen muss. Aber am Ziel angekommen, weiß man, man hat sich einen Eisbecher verdient.

My father comes to meet me on his e-bike from Bad Düben. We usually meet at the former Goitzsche open-cast mine, which is now a popular excursion destination. It’s incredible how it has changed. I still have the dreary moonscape before my eyes, burning from the industrial fumes. And today? Beach, children splashing in the water, surfers, SUPs, sailing boats. I am also taken back to Bitterfeld after being pampered by my parents. A cycle path goes around the Goitzsche to Pouch, then along the Mulde to the alum works in Bad Düben. You are really challenged. It goes uphill and downhill. I know the route by heart and count the hills I climb in first gear. Until I can’t go any further and have to dismount. But when I reach the finish, I know I’ve earned an ice cream sundae.

Wochenende Nr. 4 – langes Wochenende. Wir haben schon Oktober und am Dienstag ist Feiertag. Brückentag am Montag. Und das Wetter ist immer noch sommerlich. Was tun? Wohin? Mir fällt da der Elberadweg ein. Von Dresden bis Bad Schandau ist es eine Tagestour. Aber wie organisiert man das mit einem Lehrer und einem Nichtlehrer, der keinen Anspruch auf einen Brückentag hat. Home office kann man ja auch von unterwegs machen.

Weekend No. 4 – long weekend. It’s already October and Tuesday is a holiday. Bridge day on Monday. And the weather is still summery. What to do? Where to go? The Elbe Cycle Route comes to mind. It’s a day trip from Dresden to Bad Schandau. But how do you organise it with a teacher and a non-teacher who is not entitled to a bridge day. He can also do a home office on the road.

Das nächste Problem war das Finden einer Unterkunft. Alles bezahlbare ausgebucht, sowohl in Dresden als auch in Bad Schandau. Für 300 € aufwärts hätte man noch ein Zimmer im Steigenberger bekommen können. Geht’s noch? Ich will nur ein Bett, nicht das ganze Hotel. Alex, mein Organisationstalent fand ein Wellness-Hotel in Decin / Tschechien. Ich war gerade in der Schule in einer Aufsicht in der Mensa, als er mir das Angebot schickte. Aha. Aber Decin ist nochmal 25 km von Bad Schandau entfernt. Das wären dann an die 70 km aus der Kalten. Das Training dafür fehlt mir. Zur Not muss man einen Teil der Strecke mit dem Regio fahren.

The next problem was finding accommodation. Everything affordable was fully booked, both in Dresden and in Bad Schandau. For 300 € upwards, you could still get a room at the Steigenberger. Is it still possible? I just want a bed, not the whole hotel. Alex, my organisational talent found a wellness hotel in Decin / Czech Republic. I was supervising in the canteen at school when he sent me the offer. Aha. But Decin is another 25 km from Bad Schandau. That would be about 70 km from the cold one. I don’t have the training for that. If need be, you have to take the Regio for part of the way.

Und so fuhren wir am Sonntagmorgen um 8 Uhr mit dem Regionalexpress nach Cottbus. Wir hatten fast den ganzen Zug für uns allein. Ab Cottbus nach Dresden wurde es sehr kuschelig. Der Zug war einfach viel zu klein. Man hat noch keinen Kilometer mit dem Rad zurückgelegt und ist schon kurz vor der Ankunft völlig erschöpft von unbequemen Sitzen, Massen von Menschen, einer nicht-funktionierenden Klimaanlage.

And so we took the regional express to Cottbus at 8 o’clock on Sunday morning. We had almost the whole train to ourselves. From Cottbus to Dresden it got very cosy. The train was just far too small. You haven’t cycled a kilometre yet and shortly before arrival you are already completely exhausted from uncomfortable seats, masses of people, a non-functioning air conditioning system.

Erlebnis Deutsche Bahn. Aber sie kam pünktlich in Dresden-Neustadt an. Ohne Abstecher zu irgendwelchen Sehenswürdigkeiten ging es direkt zum Elberadweg. Mit Fähre, die Deutschlandticket akzeptierte, aber auf der Fahrräder trotzdem bezahlt werden müssen, kreuzten wir den Fluss zum ersten Mal und fuhren bis zu unserem Ziel linksseitig durch die Dresdner Elbwiesen, hinaus aus Dresden, entlang hübscher Villen, Schlösschen, Cafés und Restaurants. Ausflugsdampfer begleiteten uns entlang des Flusses. Manchmal waren wir viel schneller.

Deutsche Bahn adventure. But it arrived on time in Dresden-Neustadt. Without detours to any sights, we went directly to the Elbe cycle path. By ferry, which accepted the Deutschlandticket but on which bicycles still have to be paid for, we crossed the river for the first time and rode to our destination on the left-hand side through the Dresden Elbe meadows, out of Dresden, along pretty villas, small castles, cafés and restaurants. Excursion steamers accompanied us along the river. Sometimes we were much faster.

Die berühmten Ausflugsziele Pirna, Stadt Wehlen, Bastei, Königstein befinden sich fast alle auf der anderen Seite der Elbe. Die Aussicht darauf von der linken Seite beeindruckend. Ich versuchte mich mal wieder zu erinnern, wie es damals war, in den 70er und 80er Jahren. Ich erinnere mich an diverse Ausflugsdampferfahrten nach Decin. Meine Erinnerung ist jedoch sehr grau. Ich meine damit nicht, dass ich mich nicht daran erinnere. Ich kann mich nur an die Farbe grau erinnern. Trostlos. Die Häuschen, die heute am Ufer der Elbe glänzen und die Fachwerkhäuschen von Bad Schandau,  die man vom anderen Ufer ebenso bestaunen kann, gab es damals nur in Grau. Verfallen.

The famous excursion destinations Pirna, Stadt Wehlen, Bastei, Königstein are almost all on the other side of the Elbe. The view of them from the left side is impressive. I tried to remember how it was back then, in the 70s and 80s. I remember various excursion steamer trips to Decin. However, my memory is very grey. I don’t mean that I don’t remember it. I just remember the colour grey. Desolate. The little houses that gleam today on the banks of the Elbe and the half-timbered houses of Bad Schandau, which can also be admired from the other bank, were only grey back then. Dilapidated.

In Bad Schandau, nach 45 km, wurde ich vor die Wahl gestellt: Zug bis Schönau, dem letzten Ort vor der tschechischen Grenze, oder Weiterfahrt mit Rad. Ich hätte mich gern für Zug von Schönau bis Decin entschieden . Aber auf tschechischem Gebiet ist das Deutschlandticket nicht mehr gültig. Ich fand keinen Sinn in einer 10-minütigen Zugfahrt. Auf den Zug hätten wir dann nochmal eine Stunde warten müssen. Also Arschbacken zusammenkneifen und gegen die kleinen lästigen Fliegen, die überall klebten, kämpfen. 22 km bis Decin.

In Bad Schandau, after 45 km, I was given the choice: Train to Schönau, the last town before the Czech border, or continue by bike. I would have liked to take the train from Schönau to Decin. But on Czech territory, the Germany ticket is no longer valid. I didn’t see any point in a 10-minute train ride. We would have had to wait another hour for the train. So we clenched our cheeks and fought the little flies that were sticking everywhere. 22 km to Decin.

Ich genehmigte mir schon vor Ankunft ein Eis in Königstein. Das muss ich wieder abarbeiten. Kaum haben wir die Grenze überschritten, spürte man bereits am Geruch, dass man in einem anderen Land ist. Der typische Kohleheizungsgeruch, obwohl doch eigentlich ringsherum Natur ist.

I treated myself to an ice cream in Königstein before we arrived. I have to work that off again. As soon as we crossed the border, you could smell that you were in another country. The typical smell of coal heating, although there is actually nature all around.

67 km – geschafft. Decin. Noch einmal die Elbe überqueren. Wir genehmigen uns in einem Restaurant mit Blick auf die Elbe und das Elbsandsteingebirge ein Bier und Tapas, Pastete, Cesarsalat. Die Speisekarte gab leider nicht mehr her. Aber um etwas Energie aufzutanken, dafür hat es gereicht.

67 km – done. Decin. Crossing the Elbe once more. We treat ourselves to a beer and tapas, pâté, Cesar salad in a restaurant with a view of the Elbe and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Unfortunately, there was nothing left on the menu. But it was enough to recharge our batteries.

Und zum Schluss: Wellness-Hotel. Jemand freute sich auf die Sauna. Aber nichts mit Sauna. Das muss vorgebucht werden, denn das sind spezielle Zimmer mit Wellness /Sauna, Jacuzzis. Speziell für Manager… Achso. Was auch immer man darunter verstehen soll. Ich war eh zu müde. Mir tat alles weh. Meine Radlerhose hat Spuren an meinen Oberschenkel hinterlassen. Kleine Bläschen, wie Verbrennungen. Ich schaffte es noch zu duschen und fiel der Länge nach ins Bett und schlief 11 Stunden lang. Rekord!

And finally: Wellness hotel. Someone was looking forward to the sauna. But nothing with sauna. That has to be pre-booked, because these are special rooms with wellness/sauna, Jacuzzis. Especially for managers… I see. Whatever you want to call it. I was too tired anyway. Everything hurt. My bike pants left marks on my thighs. Little blisters, like burns. I still managed to shower and fell lengthways into bed and slept for 11 hours. Record!

Und wie kommen wir wieder zurück? Mit dem Fahrrad natürlich. Nach Home Office vor dem Hotel ging es wieder zurück, fast die gleiche Strecke bis Bad Schandau. Die Sonne scheint. 27 Grad. Ich entscheide mich für Shorts. Und das am 2. Oktober. Es wird langsam langweilig.

And how do we get back? By bike, of course. After Home Office in front of the hotel, we cycled back again, almost the same route to Bad Schandau. The sun is shining. 27 degrees. I decide to wear shorts. And that on 2 October. It’s getting boring.

In Schmilka nehmen wir die Fähre und fahren rechtsseitig weiter bis Bad Schandau. Ich war das letzte Mal zu Ostzeiten in Bad Schandau. Was aus dieser Stadt geworden ist, kann man in wenigen Worten nicht beschreiben. Mondäner Kurort. Man kann es vielleicht mit den Ostseebädern auf Usedom vergleichen.

In Schmilka we take the ferry and continue to Bad Schandau on the right. The last time I was in Bad Schandau was back in the days of the East. What has become of this town cannot be described in a few words. A mundane spa town. You can perhaps compare it with the Baltic resorts on Usedom.

In Bad Schandau endete unsere Radtour nach 25 km. Von hier ging es per Bahn und Deutschlandticket zurück nach Berlin. In der Regionalbahn und ohne Verspätung bisher. Nur dass man ewig unterwegs ist mit Umstiegen in Dresden und Cottbus. Umstiege bedingt umständlich.

Our bike tour ended in Bad Schandau after 25 km. From here we took the train by Deutschlandticket back to Berlin. By regional train and without delays so far. The only thing is that it takes forever to get there, with changes in Dresden and Cottbus. Changes require inconvenience.

Wird es noch mehr solcher sommerlichen Aktivwochenenden bis Weihnachten geben? Wer weiß, vielleicht sind wir in der nächsten Woche wieder im Kayak anzutreffen.

Will there be more such summer active weekends until Christmas? Who knows, maybe we will be back in the canoe next week.
