… kann man immer wieder in Berlin machen, wenn man sich als Wahlhelfer einträgt. Hier gibt es immer wieder etwas zu wählen. Und sogar wiederholt, weil die Berliner es nicht schaffen, gleich richtig zu wählen. So geschehen am 26.09.2021 – Bundestagswahl und Senatswahl, Bezirksverordnetenversammlung – alles an einem Tag. Und schon vor einem Jahr durfte die ganze Stadt nochmal den Senat wählen. Fazit: Bürgermeisterin wurde wieder abgesetzt. CDU gewinnt dazu und leider auch AfD.

… can be done again and again in Berlin if you register to vote. There is always something to vote for here. And even repeatedly, because Berliners don’t manage to vote right away. This is what happened on 26 September 2021 – federal election and senate election, district assembly – all on the same day. And a year ago, the whole city was allowed to vote for the Senate again. Result: Mayor was deposed again. CDU gains votes and unfortunately also AfD.

Ich war am 26.09.2021 aus drei Gründen nicht bei dieser Chaoswahl aktiv dabei. Meine Freunde und Familie können sich wenigstens einen der drei Gründe denken. Aber auch mit mir hätte es eine Wiederholungswahl gegeben. Denn auch ich kann keine fehlenden Wahlzettel drucken.

I was not actively involved in this chaotic election on 26 September 2021 for three reasons. My friends and family can think of at least one of the three reasons. But even with me, there would have been a repeat election. Because even I can’t print missing ballot papers.

Bei den Wiederholungswahlen war ich dann wieder dabei. Als Wahlvorstand. Warum mache ich das eigentlich? Sonntags so früh am Morgen aufstehen, um um 7 Uhr im Wahllokal zu stehen, bis 18 Uhr die Wahl zu leiten und im Anschluss bis Ultimo die ganzen Zettel auszuzählen, richtig zu zählen, sich zu verzählen, nochmal von vorne anzufangen? Da muss man schon ziemlich verrückt sein. Die meisten Wahlhelfer, darunter auch ne Reihe Studierender, Rentner freuen sich über das Erfrischungsgeld, welches nach dem Desaster 2021 um einige Euro aufgestockt wurde. Aber das ist gar nicht mein Grund. Als Angestellte im öffentlichen Dienst nutze ich gern den Freizeitausgleich. Ich bin seit einigen Jahren dabei und habe Bundestagswahlen, Europawahlen, Wahlen zum Senat der Stadt Berlin als Wahlvorsteherin geleitet. Jedesmal gab es zwei Tage frei, die ich meist für die Wettkampfreisen meiner Töchter genutzt habe. Verlängerte Wochenenden in Mailand, Göteborg, Weltmeisterschaften in Colorado Springs – Verlängerung der Osterferien um zwei Tage.

I then took part in the repeat elections again. As an election board member. Why am I actually doing this? To get up so early in the morning on a Sunday to be at the polling station at 7 a.m., run the election until 6 p.m. and then count all the ballot papers by the end of the day, count them correctly, miscount them and start all over again? You have to be pretty crazy to do that. Most election workers, including a number of students and pensioners, are happy about the refreshment money, which was increased by a few euros after the 2021 disaster. But that’s not my reason at all. As a public sector employee, I like to take advantage of the time off in lieu. I’ve been there for several years and have presided over federal elections, European elections and elections to the Berlin Senate as an election officer. Each time there were two days off, which I usually used for my daughters‘ competition trips. Extended weekends in Milan, Gothenburg, World Championships in Colorado Springs – extending the Easter holidays by two days.

Und heute? Mal ein verlängertes Wochenende in London, Amsterdam… Inzwischen wurden auch die Freizeitausgleichstage aufgestockt. Im letzten Jahr habe ich mir sogar fünf Tage herausgearbeitet. Da weiß man schon langsam nicht mehr, wann man die nehmen soll. Luxusproblem.

And today? A long weekend in London, Amsterdam… In the meantime, the days off in lieu have also been increased. Last year I even worked out five days for myself. It’s getting hard to know when to take them. A luxury problem.

Zurück zur Wiederholungswahl des Bundestags. Also Teilwiederholung. Denn nicht in ganz Berlin musste erneut der Bundestag gewählt werden. Aber in Pankow. Und damit auch hier im Prenzlauer Berg.

Back to the repeat election of the Bundestag. In other words, a partial rerun. Because the Bundestag did not have to be re-elected in the whole of Berlin. But in Pankow. And therefore also here in Prenzlauer Berg.

Kurz vor meinem Urlaub erhielt ich die Liste meines Teams, kontaktierte alle, baute die Whatsapp Gruppe um und fuhr in den Urlaub. Einen Tag vor der Wahl kam ich zurück mit verletzter Hand. Ich überlegte, ob ich mich krankmelde. Aber dann wären die drei Tage weg… Ich werde das schon schaffen. Als Chefin muss ich doch nur den Überblick behalten, die Schichten einteilen, im Bezirksamt anrufen und ansagen, was wie gemacht wird.

Shortly before my holiday, I received the list of my team, contacted everyone, rebuilt the Whatsapp group and went on holiday. The day before the election, I came back with an injured hand. I thought about calling in sick. But then the three days would be gone… I’ll manage. As the manager, all I have to do is keep an overview, organise the shifts, call the district office and announce what’s being done and how.

Und so trafen wir uns alle neun Wahlhelfer, Schriftführer pünktlich um 7 Uhr, richteten das Wahllokal ein und waren nach 20 min fertig. Es fehlte nur noch das Wahlverzeichnis, welches 20 Minuten vor Öffnung überbracht wurde. Wir sind wahlbereit. Kaffee frisch gekocht. Ich hatte das Glück, die Sekretärin der Schule mit ihrer Familie in meinem Team zu haben. Am Abend zuvor habe ich mit einer Hand noch schnell einen Kuchen zusammengerührt. Das Team muss bei guter Laune gehalten werden. Trotz des frühen Morgens waren alle gut drauf.

And so all nine of us electoral assistants and secretaries met punctually at 7 a.m., set up the polling station and were ready after 20 minutes. The only thing missing was the electoral roll, which was delivered 20 minutes before the polls opened. We are ready to vote. Freshly brewed coffee. I was lucky enough to have the school secretary and her family on my team. The night before, I quickly whipped up a cake with one hand. The team has to be kept in a good mood. Despite the early morning, everyone was in a good mood.

Wie schon erwartet, war die Wahlbeteiligung recht schwach, vor allem in den ersten Stunden. Wir hatten schon etwas Bedenken, dass wir nicht über die 50 kommen. Dann hätten wir nicht auszählen dürfen und die Wahlbox hätte in ein anderes Wahlbüro gebracht werden müssen. In der ersten Stunde kamen 10, dann steigerte es sich auf 15- 20 pro Stunde… dann habe ich nicht mehr auf die Zeit geschaut. Anfangs kamen die älteren Herrschaften. Gegen Mittag machten die Familien ihren Regenspaziergang mit Abstecher zur Wahl. Schichtwechsel um 13 Uhr. Ich genehmigte mir auch eine zweistündige Pause. Aber so richtig abschalten konnte ich nicht. Gegen 18 Uhr huschten noch schnell die jungen Leute rein. Der Großteil der Wählerschaft war sehr freundlich und geduldig, bedankte sich bei uns für unseren Einsatz. Nur wenige meckerten rum und beklagten sich. Mies gelaunt – da weiß man schon am Gesichtsausdruck, was gewählt wird.

As expected, the turnout was quite low, especially in the first few hours. We were a little worried that we wouldn’t get over 50. Then we wouldn’t have been allowed to count and the ballot box would have had to be moved to another polling station. In the first hour, 10 came, then it increased to 15-20 per hour… then I stopped watching the time. The older people came first. Around midday, the families went for a walk in the rain with a detour to the polls. Shift change at 1pm. I also allowed myself a two-hour break. But I couldn’t really switch off. Around 6 p.m., the young people hurried in. Most of the voters were very friendly and patient and thanked us for our efforts. Only a few were grumbling and complaining. Bad-tempered – you can tell by the look on their faces what they are voting for.

Eine Wahlbeteiligung von gerade mal 50 % – schwach für den ehemaligen Arbeiterbezirk, der in den letzten 20 Jahren der Gentrifizierung immer mehr zum Opfer fiel. Aber warum ist das so? Wenig verwunderlich, wenn man innerhalb eines Jahres dreimal an die Urne muss. Und sicher kam noch hinzu, dass die Winterferien gerade zu Ende gegangen sind. Man kann langsam den Überblick verlieren.

A voter turnout of just 50% – poor for the former working-class district, which has increasingly fallen victim to gentrification over the last 20 years. But why is that? Hardly surprising when you have to go to the polls three times in one year. And no doubt the winter holidays have just come to an end. It’s easy to lose track of things.

Um 18 Uhr wurde gezählt. Das Team war wieder vollzählig. Tische in die Mitte, Parteienkärtchen aufgestellt, Stapel bilden. Was es doch für Parteien gibt?! Das Team arbeitete mit Hochdruck, zählte, prüfte, zählte, prüfte bis alle Zettel verpackt in der Kiste landeten. Wir hatten ein Ziel: zum Tatort zu Hause sein. Noch das Protokoll richtig ausfüllen, unterschreiben, aufräumen. 19.20 Uhr waren wir durch. Wir schafften es nicht nur bis zum Tatort zu Hause zu sein, sondern sogar zur Tagesschau.

The count was taken at 6pm. The team was complete again. Tables in the centre, party cards set up, piles formed. What parties there are! The team worked flat out, counting, checking, counting, checking until all the cards were packed away in the box. We had one goal: to be home at the scene of the crime on TV. Fill out the report correctly, sign it, tidy up. At 7.20 pm we were through. Not only did we make it home by the time the ‚crime scene‘ happened, we even made it to the news.

Die Kiste mit den ganzen Wahlunterlagen musste noch zum Stützpunkt gebracht werden. Ohne langes Warten wurde die Kiste abgenommen, noch ne Unterschrift und das wars. Berlin kann wählen und auch schnell und effektiv, vor allem richtig auszählen.

The box with all the election documents still had to be taken to the base. The box was picked up without a long wait, another signature and that was it. Berlin can vote and also count quickly and effectively, and above all correctly.

Liebes Team, ich danke euch für eure Unterstützung. Es war sehr angenehm mit euch zu arbeiten. Auch wenn ich diesmal zum größten Teil das Geschehen nur überwachen konnte, haben wir wieder einen Rekord gebrochen. So früh war ich nach einem solchen Einsatz noch nie zu Hause. Ich hoffe, wir sind alle zur Europawahl wieder im Boot. Wahrscheinlich schließen wir wieder neue Bekanntschaften.

Dear team, thank you for your support. It was a pleasure to work with you. Even though I was only able to supervise most of the action this time, we broke another record. I’ve never been home so early after a mission like this before. I hope we’ll all be back on board for the European elections. We will probably make new acquaintances again.

Fehlt noch das Ergebnis, welches anscheinend keine großen Veränderungen bringen soll. Der Stadtbezirk bleibt in der Mehrheit GRÜN.

What is still missing is the result, which apparently will not bring any major changes. The majority of the borough remains GREEN.
