Noch eine Woche bis zum wohlverdienten Urlaub. Zum großen Teil genutzt für Dinge, die so liegengeblieben sind: Auto zur Durchsicht bringen, Wohnzimmer renovieren, sich mit der Wohnungsverwaltung rumärgern. Da muss man schon mal seinen Frust ablassen. Pilates und Yoga wird im Moment nur online angeboten, spät abends. Tagsüber bleiben mir die Aktivitäten auf dem Rad.

One more week until our well-deserved vacation. Mostly used for things that have been left lying around: Getting the car checked, renovating the living room, dealing with the housing management. You have to let off some frustration. Pilates and yoga are only offered online at the moment, late in the evening; during the day, I’m left with activities on the bike.

Irgendwo in sozialen Medien las ich von der Radtour Natur und Infrastruktur – mittleres Anforderungsniveau, ca. 30 km. Die Strecke führt von Westend über Grunewald, Teufelsberg, Teufelsee zur Havel bis zum Wannsee. Keine Runde, nur eine Strecke. Na gut, bisschen wenig nach meinen Touren letzter Woche an der Elbe entlang. Ich erweiterte die vorgeschlagene Route beginnend im Prenzlberg, über Alex, Unter den Linden, Straße des 17. Juni, Kaiserdamm. Und an der S-Bahn Wannsee steige ich nur wenns schneit oder blitzt und donnert in die Bahn. Aber die Wetteraussichten waren mehr als gut. Es sollte richtig heiß werden. Deshalb werde ich die Seen zur Abkühlung nutzen und mich mehr auf Natur konzentrieren.

Somewhere on social media I read about the Nature and Infrastructure cycle tour – medium level of difficulty, approx. 30 km. The route leads from Westend via Grunewald, Teufelsberg, Teufelsee to the Havel and Wannsee. Not a loop, just one route. Well, not much after my tours along the Elbe last week. I extended the suggested route starting in Prenzlberg, via Alex, Unter den Linden, Straße des 17. Juni, Kaiserdamm. And I only get on the train at Wannsee S-Bahn station when it’s snowing or thundering and lightning. But the weather forecast was more than good. It was going to be really hot. So I’ll use the lakes to cool off and concentrate more on nature.

Gesagt und getan. Auf geht‘s in Richtung Brandenburger Tor. Bin bisschen spät los. In der Mittagsglut. Und das durch die Betonwüste und über Asphalt. Bis zum Grunewald sind es ca. 15 km. Die Straße des 17. Juni war immer noch gesperrt, weil die Fanmeile abgebaut wurde. Entspannt kann man dort noch bis August flanieren und mit dem Rad oder Roller cruisen.

Said and done. Off I go in the direction of the Brandenburg Gate. I set off a little late. In the midday heat. And through the concrete desert and over asphalt. It’s about 15 km to Grunewald. The Straße des 17. Juni was still closed because the fan mile had been dismantled. You can still take a relaxed stroll there until August and cruise around on your bike or scooter.

Ab Siegessäule ist mir die Strecke nur aus dem Auto oder Bus bekannt und ich bis heute kaum auf die Infrastruktur entlang des Kaiserdamms geachtet habe. Es geht über mehrere Plätze, Ernst-Reuter-Platz, Adenauer-Platz, Bismarckviertel. Am Theodor-Heuss- Platz befindet sich das RBB Headquarter. Kaum beachtet auf dem Platz die Ewige Flamme und der Blaue Obelisk – eine Insel mitten im Verkehrsstrom.

From Siegessäule, the route is only familiar to me from the car or bus and I have hardly paid any attention to the infrastructure along the Kaiserdamm. It goes through several squares, Ernst-Reuter-Platz, Adenauer-Platz, Bismarckviertel. The RBB headquarters are located on Theodor-Heuss-Platz. Barely noticed on the square are the Eternal Flame and the Blue Obelisk – an island in the middle of the traffic flow.

Noch wenige Meter über die Heerstraße und ich befinde mich in der Natur – im Grünen, im Grunewald. Endlich Schatten. Die Hitze ist erdrückend. Was für eine blöde Idee, an einem der heißesten Tage eine Radtour zu machen!? Im Schatten des Waldes geht es aber auf 105 Hm den Teufelsberg hinauf. Ächz. E-bike auf Turbo eingestellt, sonst komme ich dort oben nicht an. Trümmerberg mit Ausblick auf den Grunewald und die Seen. Und sehr viel Geschichte verbindet sich mit dem Teufelsberg und Drachenberg. Ein Drittel des im 2. Weltkrieg zerbombten Berlins lagert dort. Heute ein Touristenmagnet wegen der ehemaligen US-Abhörstation. Die Anlage kann besichtigt werden. Eintrittspreise sehr hoch. Ich entscheide mich dagegen. Brauche erstmal eine Abkühlung im Teufelssee.

A few more meters along Heerstraße and I’m out in nature – in the green, in the forest Grunewald. Shade at last. The heat is stifling. What a stupid idea to go on a bike ride on one of the hottest days! But in the shade of the forest, I have to climb 105 meters up the Teufelsberg. Oh dear. E-bike set to turbo, otherwise I won’t make it to the top. A mountain of ruins with a view of the Grunewald forest and the lakes. And there is a lot of history associated with the Teufelsberg and Drachenberg. A third of Berlin that was bombed during the Second World War is located there. Today it is a tourist magnet because of the former US listening station. The site can be visited. Entrance fees are very high. I decide against it. Need to cool off in the lake Teufelssee first.

Der war schon recht gut besucht. Ein schattiges Plätzchen war kaum noch vorhanden. Und scheinbar macht hier jeder wonach ihm gerade ist. Textil oder FKK – jeder wie er will. Obwohl der See ein sehr kleiner ist, ist die Wasserqualität recht gut. Ich schwimme einmal ringsherum, so klein ist er. Und es kann weitergehen.

It was already quite busy. There was hardly a shady spot left. And it seems that everyone is doing what they like here. Textile or nudist – whatever you like. Although the lake is very small, the water quality is quite good. I swim around it once, it’s that small. And I can carry on.

Mein iphone macht schlapp. Ich habe meine Powerbank vergessen. Ach wie blöd. Ich will doch noch ein bisschen weiterradeln und benötige GPS. Ich schalte auf Sparmodus, um Akku zu sparen. Aber mitten im Wald gibt es kein Netz. Die Sendemasten der Abhörstation wurden wohl alle abgebaut. Unglaublich. Ich fahre auf gut Glück nach Bauchgefühl in Richtung Westen und hoffe irgendwann auf die Havel zu stoßen. Eine Landkarte am Waldrand zeigt das ganze Gebiet, aber ich bekomme keinen Anhaltspunkt, wo ich gerade bin. Kann es nur erahnen und fahre weiter.

My iphone is running out of power. I’ve forgotten my power bank. Oh how stupid. I want to cycle a bit further and need GPS. I switch to economy mode to save battery. But there’s no network in the middle of the forest. The transmitter masts of the listening station have probably all been dismantled. Unbelievable. I head west on a gut feeling and hope to come across the Havel at some point. A map at the edge of the forest shows the whole area, but I have no clue where I am. I can only guess and carry on.

Der nächste Anhaltspunkt ist der ehemalige Ausflugsdampfer Alte Liebe in der Havel. Heute dient er als Restaurant. Ich habe immer noch kein Netz und fahre an der Havel hinunter in Richtung Wannsee und stehe vor einer steilen Treppe. Es gibt keinen anderen Weg hinauf. Oberhalb verläuft die Straße. Es bleibt mir nichts anderes übrig, als wieder zurückzufahren.

The next point of reference is the former excursion steamer Alte Liebe (Old Love) in the Havel. Today it serves as a restaurant. Still without a net, I head down the Havel towards Wannsee and find myself in front of a steep flight of steps. There is no other way up. The road runs above. I have no choice but to drive back again.

Ich überlege, ob ich mich nochmal in die Fluten stürze. Es gibt einige kleine Badestellen und Bäume, in denen ich meine Hängematte hängen könnte. Noch ein bisschen chillen? Nee. In der Zwischenzeit, als ich mich nach einem Plätzchen umschaute, haben mich drei Mücken gestochen. Das hat mir die Entscheidung leicht gemacht. Inzwischen hatte ich auch wieder Netz und ich steuerte die Halbinsel Schwanenwerder an. Villen gucken. Eine stand sogar leer. Zugang zum Wasser? Keine Chance. Ich fahre einmal rundherum und lande wieder auf dem Radweg in Richtung Wannsee.

I consider plunging into the water again. There are a few small bathing spots and trees where I could hang my hammock. Chill out a bit more? Nope. In the meantime, while I was looking around for a spot, three mosquitoes bit me. That made my decision easy. In the meantime, I had internet again and headed for the Schwanenwerder peninsula. Looking at villas. One was even empty. Access to the water? Not a chance. I cycle around once and end up back on the cycle path towards Wannsee.

Appetit auf ein Eis. Ich weiß, dass es am S-Bahnhof eine Eisdiele gibt. Das Strandbad Wannsee besuche ich nicht. Besucherströme stehen vor dem Eingang. Schatten gibt es auch dort nicht. Und die Eisdiele am S-Bahnhof gibt es auch nicht mehr. Ich bekomme mein Eis beim Asiaten.

Appetite for an ice cream. I know there’s an ice cream parlor at the S-Bahn station. I don’t go to the Wannsee lido. There are streams of visitors at the entrance. There’s no shade there either. And the ice cream parlor at the S-Bahn station no longer exists. I get my ice cream at the Asian place.

Und wie weiter? Mir fällt ein, dass ich doch mein Handy bei meiner Tochter in Steglitz aufladen könnte. Über den Schlachtensee fahre ich durch Zehlendorf und Dahlem bis nach Steglitz und bin wieder mitten drin im Citystress. Am meisten nerven mich die Ampeln, an denen man so lange warten muss mitten in der Sonne.

And what next? I remember that I could charge my cell phone at my daughter’s in Steglitz. I cycle via Schlachtensee through Zehlendorf and Dahlem to Steglitz and am back in the middle of the city rush. What annoys me most are the traffic lights where you have to wait so long in the middle of the sun.

Nach einer gefühlten Ewigkeit erreiche ich die Handyaufladestation, ruhe mich etwas aus und versacke fast vor dem TV, wo die Olympischen Spiele laufen.

After what feels like an eternity, I reach the cell phone charging station, rest for a while and almost collapse in front of the TV, where the Olympic Games are on.

Nach fast zwei Stunden setze ich meine Tour durch Berlin fort und lande am Ende auf dem Beachvolleyballplatz in Kreuzberg, wo mein Mann spielt. Ich schaue nur zu. Mit Bällen habe ich es nicht so.

After almost two hours, I continue my tour of Berlin and end up at the beach volleyball court in Kreuzberg where my husband is playing. I just watch. I’m not that good with balls.

Und den Rest lege ich auch noch mit Fahrrad zurück. Durch die City in der Dunkelheit. 65 km waren es am Ende und ich hatte Kopfweh von zu viel Sonne und zu wenig Flüssigkeit.

And I also cover the rest by bike. Through the city in the dark. In the end it was 65 km and I had a headache from too much sun and too little liquid.
