Was ich von Portugal bereits vor diesem Urlaub kannte, sind die Städte Lissabon (November 2021), Porto (Mai 2022) und die Küste der Algarve (Sommer 1999). Porto ist somit keine richtige Neuentdeckung für mich, eher ein Vergleich zwischen zwei Monaten, zwischen Neben- und Hauptsaison.

What I already knew about Portugal before this vacation were the cities of Lisbon (November 2021), Porto (May 2022) and the coast of the Algarve (summer 1999). Porto is therefore not really a new discovery for me, rather a comparison between two months, between low and high season.

Damals im Mai verbrachte ich vier Tage in Porto, wusste nach wenigen Stunden in dieser Stadt bereits am ersten Abend, dass ein Tag eigentlich reicht, um alles zu erkunden. In diesem Jahr spiele ich mal die Stadtführerin und ‚freute‘ mich schon aufs Treppensteigen.

Back in May, I spent four days in Porto and knew after just a few hours in the city on the first evening that one day would be enough to explore everything. This year, I played the role of city guide and was already ‚looking forward‘ to climbing the stairs.

Wir warteten einen Tag ab, der nicht so heiß sein sollte. Es waren am Ende dann doch um die 28 Grad. Die erste Herausforderung: Parkplatz finden. In portugiesischen Städten kommt man durch fast alle Gassen mit dem Auto. Und daran erinnerte ich mich – eine Stadt voller Autos, voller Stau, sehr laut und viele Baustellen. Und daran hat sich innerhalb von zwei Jahren nicht viel geändert. Wie auch bei dem Sanierungsbedarf, den diese Stadt hat. Jedoch beschränken sich die Baustellen auf die Straßen, weniger auf die historischen, uralten Gebäude, die immer mehr verfallen. So traurig!

We waited for a day that wasn’t supposed to be so hot. In the end, it was around 28 degrees. The first challenge: finding a parking space. In Portuguese cities, you can get through almost all the streets by car. And that’s what I remembered – a city full of cars, traffic jams, very loud and lots of roadworks. And not much has changed in two years. As has the need for redevelopment in this city. However, the construction sites are limited to the streets and less to the historic, ancient buildings, which are increasingly falling into disrepair. So sad!

Zurück zum Parkplatz: Wir fanden eine Parklücke in der Nähe der berühmten Stahlbrücke Dom Louis I. Zwei Stunden Parkzeit Maximum, was bedeutete, wir mussten zweimal zurücklaufen, um die Parkzeit zu verlängern. Fahre niemals mit dem Auto in eine portugiesische Stadt, es ist ein Krampf.

Back to the parking lot: We found a parking space near the famous steel bridge Dom Louis I. Two hours parking time maximum, which meant we had to walk back twice to extend the parking time. Never take a car into a Portuguese city, it’s a struggle.

Die ersten beiden Stunden nutzen wir für den Stadtteil Gaia auf der anderen Seite des Flusses Douro, wofür wir die Brücke mit Massen von Touris und der Straßenbahn in der Mitte überqueren. Wir nutzen auch die Seilbahn hin und zurück, um ohne große Anstrengung nach unten an das Ufer und wieder hinauf zu kommen. Es gab aber diesmal keinen Coupon für eine Portwein-Verkostung, der wahrscheinlich auch so ein Nebensaisonangebot ist, um die Besucher in die Weinlager zu locken. Das Treiben am Ufer ist im August noch bunter. Viele Händler mit Billig-fake-Artikeln, Kitsch und Dingen, die man nicht braucht. Wir laufen durch die Gassen. Es ist sehr schwer, ungestört ein Foto von diversen Häusern, Figuren etc zu machen.

We use the first two hours for the Gaia district on the other side of the Douro River, for which we cross the bridge with masses of tourists and the streetcar in the middle. We also use the cable car there and back to get down to the riverbank and back up again without too much effort. This time, however, there was no coupon for a port wine tasting, which is probably also an off-season offer to attract visitors to the wine warehouses. The hustle and bustle on the waterfront is even more colorful in August. Lots of traders with cheap fake items, kitsch and things you don’t need. We walk through the alleyways. It is very difficult to take an undisturbed photo of various houses, figures etc.

Insgesamt scheint mir alles auf ‚Schnell, schnell‘ getrimmt zu sein. Ja, haben auch nur einen Tag und dreimal zwei Stunden Zeit.

All in all, everything seems to be geared towards ‚quick, quick‘. Yes, we only have one day and three times two hours.

Im Stadtteil Baixa (das eigentliche Zentrum) führte ich meinen Mann zum Bahnhof Sao Bento, dessen Foyer für seine Azujelos bekannt ist. Auch hier stapelten sich Touristen, weniger Bahnreisende. Schöne Fotos ohne unbekannte Menschen auf diesen kaum möglich. Und eine Jahrhhundert-Baustelle direkt vor dem Bahnhof. Einige Azujelos sind mit einer Schutzfolie überklebt.

In the Baixa district (the actual center), I took my husband to the Sao Bento train station, whose foyer is known for its azujelos. Here, too, there were piles of tourists, not so much train passengers. It’s almost impossible to take nice photos without unknown people on them. And a century-old building site right in front of the station. Some of the azujelos are covered with protective film.

Wir laufen weiter zur Kathedrale und dem Glockenturm, auf den ich vor zwei Jahren geklettert bin. Heute nimmt man einen unverschämt hohen Eintritt für die Besichtigung von Kathedrale und Turmbesteigung. Wir verzichten und genießen stattdessen das Treiben um den Turm herum in einer Art Designereisdiele. Hier werden wahrhaft Eiskreationen verkauft. Vor zwei Jahren war dieser Laden noch geschlossen. War es die Pandemie, die viele Geschäfte in die Knie zwang oder war es noch die Nebensaison, in der die Stadt im halben Dornröschenschlaf lag.

We walk on to the cathedral and the bell tower, which I climbed two years ago. Today, you have to pay an outrageously high entrance fee to visit the cathedral and climb the tower. We decide not to go and instead enjoy the hustle and bustle around the tower in a kind of designer ice cream parlor. They really do sell ice cream creations here. Two years ago, this store was still closed. Was it the pandemic that brought many stores to their knees or was it the low season when the city was half asleep?

Wir wandern weiter durch die Gassen, kommen zufällig an einem Miradouro (Ausblick) entlang, den ich noch nicht kannte, und steigen die Treppen hinab zum Fluss. Unglaublich, hier bin ich mal mit dem Fahrrad lang. Heute ist hier kein Durchkommen möglich. Fußgängerstau!

We continue walking through the alleyways, come across a miradouro (viewpoint) that I hadn’t seen before and climb down the steps to the river. Unbelievable, I once rode my bike along here. Today it’s impossible to get through. Pedestrian congestion!

Die Treppen müssen wir wieder hinauf und wir beschließen unseren Ausflug nach Porto in einer Selbstbedienungskneipe mit Blick auf die Brücke und den Stadtteil Gaia. Holen uns noch ein Foto vom Brückenschatten und treten nach den letzten beiden Stunden Autoparkzeit die Rückreise nach Peniche an.

We have to climb the stairs again and end our trip to Porto in a self-service bar with a view of the bridge and the Gaia district. We get another photo of the bridge’s shadow and, after parking our car for the last two hours, set off on our return journey to Peniche.

Das Navi leitet uns von der Autobahn weg, die Küstenstraße Estrada Atlantico entlang, weil wir nochmal in die kühlen Wellen des Atlantiks springen wollen. Was für ein wunderbarer Zufall: Wir erleben einen der kitschigsten Sonnenuntergänge an einem Leuchtturm mit. Und vor uns nur der Ozean, kein Mensch, der das Foto zerstört.

The navigation system guides us off the highway and along the Estrada Atlantico coastal road because we want to jump into the cool waves of the Atlantic again. What a wonderful coincidence: we witness one of the most kitschy sunsets at a lighthouse. And just the ocean in front of us, no one to ruin the photo.

Sehr spät sind wir zurück in Peniche, packen mal wieder unsere Koffer. Morgen geht es weiter in Richtung Lissabon und auf die Halbinsel Setubal.

We are back in Peniche very late and pack our bags once again. Tomorrow we’re heading towards Lisbon and the Setubal peninsula.

Ich bekomme Lob für meine Stadtführungskünste. Trotz der Widrigkeiten, die mit der Hochsaison verbunden sind, war es doch ein gelungener Ausflug in eine der ältesten Städte Portugals.

I receive praise for my city tour skills. Despite the adversities associated with the high season, it was still a successful trip to one of Portugal’s oldest cities.
