Ein Mal Mittelmeer, ein Mal Côte d‘Azur sollte schon sein, wenn wir schon in der Nähe sind. Nicht nur der Blick aus der Ferne, sondern richtig rein in die Massen.

A visit to the Mediterranean and the Côte d’Azur is a must while we’re in the area. Not just the view from afar, but really immersed in the crowds.

Genauso kam es mir vor, als wir nach ca. 2h Fahrt von Draguinan bis Tour Fondue, gelegen auf der Halbinsel von Huyères, im Hafen der Fähre nach Porquerolles ankamen. Die Parkplätze allesamt schon recht voll. Ein paar wenige Plätze in der hintersten Reihe waren noch übrig. Eine lange Schlange am Eingang der Fähre. Tickets wurden ohne Zeitbindung verkauft. Das heißt? Sollten wir mit der 12 Uhr Fähre nicht mitkommen, müssen wir bis 13.30 Uhr warten? Um uns herum blieb alles ruhig und stellte sich ordnungsgemäß in die Schlange. Die erste Fähre fuhr ohne uns – vor uns noch ca. 20 m Warteschlange. Aber eine zweite fuhr zur gleichen Zeit.

I felt the same way when we arrived at the port of the ferry to Porquerolles after a 2-hour drive from Draguinan to Tour Fondue, located on the Huyères peninsula. The parking lots were already quite full. There were still a few spaces left in the back row. A long queue at the ferry entrance. Tickets were sold without a time limit. What does that mean? If we don’t get on the 12 noon ferry, do we have to wait until 1.30 pm? Everyone around us remained calm and queued up properly. The first ferry left without us – there was still a queue of about 20 meters in front of us. But a second one left at the same time.

Ich konnte mir schon an den Massen ausmalen, was dann auf der kleinen Insel los ist. Auch in Frankreich sind jetzt Ferien. Es ist wunderbares Wetter. Vielleicht die letzte Chance in diesem Jahr noch einmal ein Bad im Meer zu genießen.

I could already imagine from the crowds what would be going on on the small island. France is also on vacation now. The weather is wonderful. Perhaps the last chance to enjoy a dip in the sea this year.

Ich bin ein bisschen skeptisch und werde an den Massentourismus erinnert, den wir in Portugal auf der Berlenga Insel erlebten. Hier schien es aber keine Touristenbegrenzung zu geben und die Insel scheint doch etwas größer zu sein.

I am a little skeptical and am reminded of the mass tourism we experienced on Berlenga Island in Portugal. But there didn’t seem to be a tourist limit here and the island does seem to be a bit bigger.

Wir leihen uns Räder aus, um vielleicht ein paar ruhigere Nischen per Rad zu finden. Und wenn wir schon mal per Rad unterwegs sind, nicht viel Zeit haben, dann gleich ein E-bike. Ich bin zu sehr E-bike verwöhnt. Die anderen Räder waren alle Mountainbikes, womit ich überhaupt keine Erfahrung habe. Außerdem haben wir Urlaub und wollen uns nicht übermäßig anstrengen.

We borrow bikes so that we can perhaps find a few quieter niches by bike. And if we’re already out and about by bike and don’t have much time, then an e-bike. I’m too spoiled by e-bikes. The other bikes were all mountain bikes, which I have no experience with at all. Besides, we’re on vacation and don’t want to exert ourselves too much.

E-bike war die richtige Entscheidung. Es sind einige Steigungen zu meistern auf dieser kleinen Insel. Unglaublich. Und der Zustand der Wege – meist Schotter, dicke Wurzeln. Bergauf im Turbo, bergab wird man richtig durchgeschüttelt.

E-bike was the right decision. There are quite a few climbs to master on this small island. Unbelievable. And the condition of the paths – mostly gravel, thick roots. Uphill in turbo, downhill you get really shaken up.

Wir streben in Richtung Westspitze, machen aber erstmal Pause und Picknick am Strand von Notre-Dame. Das Wasser wunderbar, klar, erfrischend, nicht zu kalt. Ein Genuss. Wir bleiben nicht lange, denn eigentlich hatte ich einen Rundkurs von 22 km um die ganze Insel geplant. Aber zur Westspitze kamen wir nicht ganz. Es war zu viel Fußvolk unterwegs, es wurde verdammt steil und holprig. Wir trauten uns nicht hinauf, auch nicht mit E-bike. Für einen Augenblick genossen wir den Blick auf die Küste und ließen uns den steilen Weg hinunterschütteln.

We head towards the western tip, but first take a break and have a picnic on Notre-Dame beach. The water is wonderful, clear, refreshing and not too cold. A delight. We don’t stay long, as I had actually planned a 22 km circuit around the whole island. But we didn’t quite make it to the western tip. There was too much foot traffic on the way, and it was damn steep and bumpy. We didn’t dare go up there, not even with an e-bike. For a moment, we enjoyed the view of the coast and let ourselves be shaken down the steep path.

Richtung steile Südküste waren die Wege nicht anders, aber sie wurden leerer. Kaum noch ein Fußgänger, Wanderer. Ab und zu mal ganz schnelle Radfahrer. Wir erreichen die Steilküste mit Blick in die Calanque – eine felsige Bucht.

Towards the steep south coast, the paths were no different, but they were emptier. Hardly any pedestrians or hikers. The occasional fast cyclist. We reach the steep coast with a view of the calanque – a rocky bay.

An der Stelle müssen wir leider umplanen. Die Wege, die mir mein Komoot Reiseplan vorschlägt, sind für Radfahrer nicht befahrbar. Die Zeit schreitet fort. Wir müssen um 17 Uhr die Räder wieder abgeben und wollen die Fähre um 17.30 Uhr zurück nehmen. Die gesamte Insel schaffen wir nicht zu erkunden. Von dieser Idee muss ich mich leider verabschieden. So genießen wir lieber noch einmal ein Bad im Meer. Und das tat uns sehr gut!

Unfortunately, we have to change our plans at this point. The routes suggested by my Komoot travel plan are not suitable for cyclists. Time is running out. We have to return the bikes at 5 pm and want to take the ferry back at 5.30 pm. We don’t manage to explore the whole island. Unfortunately, I have to say goodbye to this idea. So we prefer to enjoy another dip in the sea. And that did us a world of good!

Vielleicht war es in diesem Jahr wirklich das letzte Mal, dass wir baden waren. Am 22. Oktober 2024 bei 23 Grad.
