So habe ich mir aber meinen Urlaub in der Provence nicht vorgestellt. Regen, Wind, kalt. 15 Grad. Soviel sind es wahrscheinlich gerade auch in Berlin.

But this is not how I imagined my vacation in Provence. Rain, wind, cold. 15 degrees. That’s probably what it’s like in Berlin right now.

Auch am Sonntag sah es nicht anders aus. Sehr wechselhaft. Sonne, Wolken, Regen. Wir wagen es dennoch. Machen nicht die Schlössertour der Loire (zu weit weg), sondern die des Luberon.

Sunday was no different. Very changeable. Sun, clouds, rain. Nevertheless, we took the plunge. We don’t do the Loire castles tour (too far away), but the Luberon instead.

Nr. 1: Château de Lourmarin. Eine halbe Stunde Autofahrt. Das Schloss macht irgendwann mal Mittagspause. Also brechen wir gleich nach dem Frühstück auf, dass heute eine Stunde später stattfand, denn uns wurde wegen der Zeitumstellung eine Stunde geschenkt. (Wann hört diese irrsinnige Zeitumstellerei endlich auf? Mein Biorhythmus kommt jedesmal seit nun 44 Jahren durcheinander.)

No. 1: Château de Lourmarin. Half an hour’s drive. The castle takes a lunch break at some point. So we set off straight after breakfast, which was an hour later today because we were given an hour off due to the time change. (When will this insane time change finally stop? My biorhythm has been messed up every time for 44 years now).

In Lourmarin bekommen wir einen Guide in Form eines laminierten Faltblattes in die Hand gedrückt und wir dürfen unsere Tour durch das Schloss selbst starten.

In Lourmarin, we are given a guide in the form of a laminated leaflet and we are allowed to start our tour of the castle ourselves.

Was gibt es über diese Schloss zu erzählen: Man hat es im 15. Jahrhundert errichtet als Festung. Ein Jahrhundert später wird daraus ein Renaissanceprunkbau, um dem architektonischen Geschmack zu entsprechen. Damit ist es eins der ersten Renaissance-Schlösser der Provence. Doch nach der Französischen Revolution verfiel es und wurde vergessen. Es war in einem so schlechten Zustand, dass man sogar an Abriss dachte. Na bloß gut, dass ein edler Gönner um die Ecke kam und es kaufte, wieder instandsetzte. Heute gehört es der Académie des Sciences, Agriculture, Arts et Belles Lettres.

What is there to tell about this castle? It was built in the 15th century as a fortress. A century later, it was transformed into a Renaissance palace to suit architectural taste. This makes it one of the first Renaissance castles in Provence. However, after the French Revolution, it fell into disrepair and was forgotten. It was in such a bad state that demolition was even considered. Luckily, a noble patron came around the corner and bought it and restored it. Today it belongs to the Académie des Sciences, Agriculture, Arts et Belles Lettres.

Und heute steht es für jedermann offen, auch am Sonntag und in der Nebensaison. Kein Hotel, kein Weingut. Neben einer Sammlung historischer Möbel, Kunstwerke werden Ausstellungen, Konzerte und Lesungen angeboten und zieht zahlreiche Touris an, die dem Ort Lourmarin offensichtlich viel Geld bringen.

And today it is open to everyone, even on Sundays and in the off-season. Not a hotel, not a winery. In addition to a collection of historical furniture and works of art, exhibitions, concerts and readings are offered and attract numerous tourists, who obviously bring a lot of money to the village of Lourmarin.

Nach der Besichtigung schlenderten wir durch das Dorf, dass am Sonntag tatsächlich lebte. Kleine Kunstgalerien haben sich dort niedergelassen, Boutiquen, die vor allem überteuerte Kleidung anbieten, Cafés und Restaurants, in denen ein Doubleespresso 6 € kostet.

After the tour, we strolled through the village, which was actually alive on Sunday. Small art galleries have set up shop there, boutiques selling mainly overpriced clothes, cafés and restaurants where a double espresso costs €6.

Nr. 2: Château d‘Ansouis. Auf der Fahrt dorthin durchquerten wir mal wieder ein schönstes Dorf – Cucuron. Bekannt für diverse Filmszenen, die hier spielen. Aber im Gegensatz zu Lourmarin – tote Hose. Alles schläft noch. Wir steigen noch nicht einmal aus dem Auto aus und fahren gleich weiter nach Ansouis.

No. 2: Château d’Ansouis. On the way there, we once again passed through a most beautiful village – Cucuron. Known for various movie scènes set here. But in contrast to Lourmarin – it’s dead. Everything is still asleep. We don’t even get out of the car and drive straight on to Ansouis.

Laut Reiseführer und Google ist das Schloss ab 15. Oktober geschlossen. Damit mache ich mir nicht viel Hoffnung, heute noch ein zweites Schloss von innen zu sehen. Stattdessen suche ich mir eine kleine Miniwanderung von 5 km durch Ansouis‘ Gassen, durch das Tal, eine kleine Anhöhe hinauf – mit Blick auf das Dorf heraus.

According to the travel guide and Google, the castle is closed from October 15. So I don’t hold out much hope of seeing the inside of a second castle today. Instead, I choose a short 5 km mini-hike through Ansouis‘ alleyways, through the valley, up a small hill – with a view of the village.

Uhren und GPS eingestellt und los gehts. Am Schloss stehen ganz andere Öffnungszeiten als auf Google. Geöffnet „tous les jours“ (alle Tage) bis Toussaint (Allerheiligen) – also bis 1. November. Es war trotzdem Fermé (geschlossen). Die Kirche, die auch Schauplatz eines Films mit Yves Montand war, war geöffnet. Aber mit Vorsicht betreten. Diese hat ein Schimmelproblem. Am besten nur mit Maske reingehen und nicht so lange bleiben.

Clocks and GPS set and off we go. The opening times on the castle are completely different to those on Google. Open „tous les jours“ (all days) until Toussaint (All Saints‘ Day) – i.e. until November 1st. It was still fermé (closed). The church, which was also the setting for a movie starring Yves Montand, was open. But enter with caution. It has a mold problem. It’s best to only go in wearing a mask and not stay too long.

Die Wanderrunde musste nach ca. 1 km abgebrochen werden. Wegen Regen. Nicht bloß ein Schauer. Es regnete sich richtig ein. Wir hätten einfach mal auf den Regenradar blicken sollen…

The hike had to be aborted after about 1 km. Because of rain. Not just a shower. It really started to rain. We should have just looked at the rain radar…

Das war eine kleine Mini-Schlösserrunde. Der Großteil der Schlösser ist leider in dieser Jahreszeit schon geschlossen. Wir haben irgendwie kein Glück mit diversen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Gefühlt jede zweite ist schon im Winterbetrieb oder öffnet nur ab und an mal.

That was a little mini tour of castles. Unfortunately, most of the castles are already closed at this time of year. We somehow have no luck with various sights. It feels like every other one is already closed for the winter or only opens from time to time.

Bei all den Schlössern und Kirchen und Plätzen, die in provenzalischen Filmen als Kulisse dienten, sollten wir noch eine Tour unternehmen, die sich nur damit beschäftigt.

With all the castles and churches and squares that have been used as backdrops in Provençal films, we should do another tour that focuses solely on them.
