…is not far from our hostel. Just 150m to the town hall, in front of which stands the fountain from Temps des Secrets.

Es ist unser letzter Tag im Luberon. Mir schmerzen noch die Füße von der großen Tour am Tag zuvor. Heute werden kleine Brötchen gebacken: Spaziergang durch Grambois, eine Filmkulisse der Pagnol Verfilmungen.

It’s our last day in the Luberon. My feet are still aching from the long tour the day before. Today we bake small buns: a walk through Grambois, a film set for the Pagnol adaptations.

In einer Brochure fand ich einen QR Code, der auf eine Balade durch diesen Ort verweist, an unserer Herberge vorbeiführt. Dann fangen wir doch mal hier an. Wanderschuhe wurden dennoch angezogen. Man weiß nie, wo der Wanderpfad entlangführt.

I found a QR code in a brochure that refers to a balade through this place, which leads past our hostel. So let’s start here. Hiking boots were put on anyway. You never know where the hiking trail will take you.

Wir beginnen an der Boulangerie / Bäckerei, in der Silvio, unser Gastgeber, jeden Morgen das leckere Baguette für unser Frühstück besorgt. Hier geht wirklich alles noch von Hand. Croissants werden mit den Händen geformt und nicht von irgendwelchen Fabriken geliefert und aufgebacken.

We start at the boulangerie / bakery where Silvio, our host, gets the delicious baguette for our breakfast every morning. Everything really is still done by hand here. Croissants are formed by hand and not delivered and baked by some factory.

An den Resten der Stadtmauer geht es entlang bis zum Marktplatz, oder Place de la mairie (Bürgermeisteramt), auf dem der besagte Filmbrunnen steht. Durch kleine Gassen hindurch drehen wir eine Minirunde durch das Zentrum.

We walk along the remains of the city wall to the market square, or Place de la mairie (mayor’s office), where the afore mentioned film fountain stands. We take a mini tour of the center through small alleyways.

Wir spazieren aus dem Ort heraus, betrachten die uralte riesige Eiche – den Seigneur du village, finden ein „Fitnesscenter“ en plein air / unter freiem Himmel.

We walk out of the village, look at the ancient giant oak tree – the Seigneur du village, find a „fitness center“ en plein air / in the open air.

Die Eiche wird mit Wasser gut versorgt, denn nicht weit weg von ihr, ist die Quelle Fontvérane.

The oak is well supplied with water, as the Fontvérane spring is not far away.

Es geht einen Wiesenweg hinab zum Èze-Fluss oder Bach. Auf der Wiese werden wir daran erinnert, dass Halloween vor der Tür steht. Sie ist regelrecht von Spinnweben überzogen. Echte Spinnweben. Im Dorf findet man auch Spinnweben an den Häusern – Fake. Hier scheint man Halloween sehr ernst zu nehmen.

We walk down a meadow path to the Èze river or stream. In the meadow, we are reminded that Halloween is just around the corner. It is literally covered in cobwebs. Real cobwebs. There are also cobwebs on the houses in the village – fake. Halloween seems to be taken very seriously here.

Der kurze Spaziergang führt zum Pigeonnier / Taubenturm des Dorfes, der als solcher nicht mehr genutzt wird. Gehört eben dazu zur Filmkulisse und Geschichten, die vor mehr als 100 Jahren spielten. Die Architektur dieser Türme ist in jeder Region anders. Hier sehen sie aus wie ein Kegelstumpf / Schrägzylinder.

The short walk leads to the village’s pigeonnier / pigeon tower, which is no longer used as such. It is part of the movie set and stories that took place more than 100 years ago. The architecture of these towers is different in every region. Here they look like a truncated cone / sloping cylinder.

Der Pfad führt wieder hinauf ins Dorf mit einem Blick auf den Luberon. Was für eine schöne Ecke.

The path leads back up to the village with a view of the Luberon. What a beautiful corner.

Nach 45 Minuten kommen wir am Start / Ziel an, genießen die Sonne auf unserer Terrasse und setzen unsere Erkundungstour am Nachmittag fort.

After 45 minutes, we arrive at the start/finish, enjoy the sun on our terrace and continue our exploration tour in the afternoon.

Es fehlt noch Mirabeau – kein schönstes Dorf, aber schön. Sehr ruhig. Es gibt ein altes Postgebäude, einen Friseur, Bäcker, Lebensmittelladen, Apotheke, Ärzte. Ein Schloss, das in Privatbesitz ist, man keinen Zugang hat. Ein „Chiens Méchants“ (Böse Hunde) – Schild am Eingangstor. Man will keine Besucher. Natürlich gibt es eine kleine Kirche, die ihre Türen immer offen hat. Und einen Brunnen, an dem die Kupferstatue von Manon sitzt. Genau hier wurde Pagnols Manon des Sources (Manons Rache) und Jean de Florette gedreht.

Mirabeau is still missing – not the prettiest village, but beautiful. Very quiet. There is an old post office building, a hairdresser, bakery, grocery store, pharmacy, doctors. A castle that is privately owned and cannot be accessed. A „Chiens Méchants“ (Bad Dogs) sign at the entrance gate. They don’t want visitors. Of course, there is a small church that is always open. And a fountain where the copper statue of Manon sits. Pagnol’s Manon des Sources (Manon’s Revenge) and Jean de Florette were filmed right here.

Ich kenne die Filme nicht, habe die Pagnol Bücher fast alle gelesen. Temps des Secrets war sogar das erste Buch, was ich in Französisch gelesen habe. Ich bin ganz angetan vom Flair der Region und forsche nach, wo ich die Filme vielleicht streamen kann. Temps des Secrets wurde sogar vor zwei Jahren neu verfilmt. Soeben habe ich mir den Trailer angesehen. Alles so wie es hier wirklich ist. Doch ich leihe mir zunächst Jean de Florette in Französisch aus und lasse mich von den Beschreibungen verführen. Ich habe es genauso gesehen und kann mir das Setting gut vorstellen. Ich muss gar nicht den Film schauen.

I don’t know the movies, but I’ve read almost all of the Pagnol books. Temps des Secrets was actually the first book I read in French. I’m quite taken with the flair of the region and am looking into where I might be able to stream the films. Temps des Secrets was even remade into a movie two years ago. I’ve just watched the trailer. Everything as it really is here. But first I borrow Jean de Florette in French and let myself be seduced by the descriptions. I’ve seen it the same way and can easily imagine the setting. I don’t even have to watch the movie.
