Wir kommen hier nie vor 9 aus den Federn. Nicht weil es so gemütlich ist, sondern weil um 9.30 Uhr erst die Sonne aufgeht. Zuerst ein Blick aufs Thermometer: -15 °C. Was für eine Hitze! Mir wird ganz heiß. Aber leichter Schneefall. Dicke Wolke.

We never get out of bed before 9 here. Not because it’s so cosy, but because the sun doesn’t rise until 9.30 am. First a look at the thermometer: -15 °C. What a heat! I’m getting really hot. But light snowfall. Thick cloud.

Gehe nochmal ins Bett. Heute kein Skifahren, sondern fauler Urlaub. Irgendwann gegen 11 gibt es Frühstück und noch etwas später inspizieren wir die Piste. Die Flutlichtanlage war schon an. Einige Skifahrer, mehr als gestern, genießen die Abfahrt im Schnee. Hmm, was falsch gemacht? Vielleicht. Trotzdem: Wir haben Urlaub und wollen es nicht übertreiben. Alex‘ Fitnesswatch sagt schon an: Er soll es nicht übertreiben. Zu viel sportliche Aktivität.

Go to bed again. No skiing today, just a lazy holiday. We have breakfast sometime around 11 and inspect the piste a little later. The floodlights were already on. A few more skiers than yesterday are enjoying the descent in the snow. Hmm, did we do something wrong? Perhaps. Still, we’re on holiday and don’t want to overdo it. Alex’s fitness watch already says: He shouldn’t overdo it. Too much sporting activity.

Wir suchen uns ein Café, von denen es in Levi nicht so viele gibt und diese dementsprechend gefüllt sind. Wir werden fündig und genießen den Tag bis zum Sonnenuntergang bei einem Large Cappucino. Ich habe vorgesorgt und Strickstrumpf mit dabei. So wird mir nicht langweilig und meine Hände bleiben in Bewegung. Ein richtig krasses Strickmuster fordert volle Aufmerksamkeit. Ich glaube, die Finnen sind auch enthusiastische Stricker. Man sieht es an den tollen Pullovern und Socken. Im Supermarkt gibt es 80 % Wolle für 3,20 Euro und sogar Sockenstrickhefte. Leider kann ich kein Finnisch, aber die Zeichen und Patterns versteht man auch ohne die Sprache zu können. Wenn ich hier leben würde, würde ich der Strickcommunity beitreten. Haha.

We look for a café, of which there are not so many in Levi and they are accordingly full. We find one and enjoy the day until sunset with a large cappuccino. I’ve taken precautions and brought my knitting stuff with me. That way I don’t get bored and my hands keep moving. A really cool knitting pattern demands my full attention. I think the Finns are also enthusiastic knitters. You can see it in the great jumpers and socks. The supermarket sells 80% wool for 3.20 euros and even sock knitting books. Unfortunately, I don’t speak Finnish, but you can understand the signs and patterns even without knowing the language. If I lived here, I would join the knitting community. Haha.

Irgenwie fehlt Bewegung. Ich werde unruhig. Warum komme ich denn nicht früher drauf? Die Komoot-App!!! Ich schaue nach, was so im Umkreis angeboten wird. Wow! 120 Touren. Ok, davon sind ca 60 identisch. Aber für alle Levels etwas dabei. Bin noch etwas skeptisch. Bei dem Schneefall sind doch die Wanderwege tief verschneit und man kommt nur mit Ski durch. 3 km sollten doch zu schaffen sein. Eins, zwei Wege führen an einen See, von denen es hier Millionen gibt. Laut Beschreibung nachts ein super Aurora Hotspot.

Somehow there’s a lack of movement. I’m getting restless. Why can’t I figure it out sooner? The Komoot app!!! I take a look at what’s on offer in the neighbourhood. Wow! 120 tours. Ok, about 60 of them are identical. But there’s something for all levels. I’m still a bit sceptical. With the snowfall, the hiking trails are covered in deep snow and you can only get through on skis. 3 kilometres should be manageable. One or two paths lead to a lake, of which there are millions here. According to the description, it’s a great aurora hotspot at night.

Wir probieren es aus und stapfen in der Dämmerung durch den Schnee. Vereinzelt einige Hütten im Wald, manche mit riesigen Glasfenstern. Fast alle sind sicher Ferienhütten. Die Straße zum See ist geräumt. Am See stehen kleine Saunahäuschen. Cool. Ich teste meine Moonboots und stapfe durch den Schnee – Test bestanden.

We try it out and trudge through the snow in the twilight. There are a few huts in the forest, some with huge glass windows. Almost all of them are probably holiday cabins. The road to the lake is cleared. There are small sauna huts by the lake. Cool. I test my moon boots and trudge through the snow – test passed.

Eins ist klar: Sollte es heute Abend aufklaren, so wie die Wettervorhersage ansagt, dann komme ich nochmal hierher. Jetzt sind wir schon vier Tage hier und haben noch nicht eine Aurora gesehen.

One thing is clear: if it clears up tonight, as the weather forecast says, I’ll come back here again. We’ve been here for four days now and haven’t seen an aurora yet.

Es setzt richtig starker Schneefall auf dem Rückweg ein. Ja, bitte alles runter. So haben wir morgen ausgezeichnete Pistenverhältnisse. Es wird auch immer wärmer. Wir sind jetzt schon bei -6°C. Eine Temperaturschwankung von fast über 30 Grad. Wie hält das unser Körper aus? Ich komme ins Schwitzen – ohne Sauna.

It starts to snow heavily on the way back. Yes, please get everything down. We’ll have excellent piste conditions tomorrow. It’s also getting warmer and warmer. We’re already at -6°C. A temperature fluctuation of almost over 30 degrees. How can our bodies cope with that? I start sweating – without a sauna.

Den Abend verbringe ich am Handy. Ständige Kontrolle der Wetterapp und der Aurora-Alarm-App. Aller paar Minuten kontrolliere ich. Es schneit bis 22 Uhr. Ich glaube, das wird heute wieder nichts. Doch dann gegen 23.30 Uhr waren nur noch Schleier am Horizont und plötzlich eine leichte grüne Farbe. Bilde ich es mir ein?

I spend the evening on my mobile phone. Constantly checking the weather app and the Aurora alarm app. I check every few minutes. It snows until 10 pm. I don’t think it’s going to happen today. But then at around 11.30 p.m. there were only veils on the horizon and suddenly a light green colour. Is it just my imagination?

Raus! Überprüfen! Und tatsächlich, kaum sind wir aus dem Ort wird die Aurora sichtbar. Jedoch nur durch die Kamera, ganz leicht. Ich stecke meinen Mann an, der sich eine bessere Alarm-App auf sein Handy lädt. Allerdings ist das eine App, die keine Lust auf Entdeckung macht. Die Überraschung wird einem genommen, wenn einem angesagt wird, dass wenig Aurora-Aktivität vorhergesagt wird. Ich glaube das nicht. Wie auch die Wettervorhersage hier nicht stimmt, beziehungsweise ich will, dass sie nicht stimmt.

Check it out! And indeed, as soon as we leave the village, the aurora becomes visible. But only through the camera, very slightly. I put my husband on, who downloads a better alarm app onto his mobile phone. However, it’s an app that doesn’t make you want to discover anything. The surprise is taken away when it tells you that little aurora activity is predicted. I don’t believe that. Just like the weather forecast here isn’t right, or rather I don’t want it to be.
