… sollte ich noch einmal frische Luft und Bewegung genießen. Ehe der Korrekturstapel sich vor mir auftürmt. Nächste Woche ist es soweit: schriftliche Abschlussprüfung und schriftliches Abitur, hintereinander weg, ohne Pause. Wer sich das wohl wieder ausgedacht hat.

… I should enjoy some fresh air and exercise. Before the exam corrections pile up in front of me. Next week is the day: written final exam and written Abitur, one after the other, without a break. I wonder who came up with that again.

Nicht mal eine Woche nach den Osterferien dürfen wir mal wieder ein sehr langes Wochenende genießen. 1. Mai, Brückentag, Wochenende. Für eine kleine Tour blieb aber nur der Sonntag, da wir uns am Freitag als Familie von einem geliebten Menschen verabschiedeten.

Not even a week after the Easter holidays, we can once again enjoy a very long weekend. 1st May, bridge day, weekend. However, we only had Sunday for a short trip, as we said goodbye to a loved one as a family on Friday.

Ausgerechnet am Sonntag war der unbeständigste Tag des Wochenendes. Etwas windig, ab und zu Regenschauer. Das hielt mich aber nicht davon ab, die Wanderschuhe anzuziehen. Zur Auswahl standen eine Tour um den Mündener See in Angermünde und der Grunewald – Teufelsberg – Drachenberg. Wir entschieden uns für letzteres, da uns die zwei Stunden Anfahrt mit der Bahn bis Angermünde abschreckten. Da ist man doch schneller und flexibler im Grunewald.

Sunday of all days was the most unsettled day of the weekend. A bit windy, rain showers from time to time. But that didn’t stop me from putting on my hiking boots. We had the choice between a tour around the lake Mündener See in Angermünde and the forest Grunewald – Teufelsberg – Drachenberg. We opted for the latter, as the two-hour journey by train to Angermünde put us off. It’s quicker and more flexible to Grunewald.

S-Bahnhof Grunewald, Gleis 17. Bekannt für die Judentransporte nach Theresienstadt, Warschau, Auschwitz. Tausende wurden in der Nazizeit von dort abtransportiert. Und dieses Gleis ist heute Gedenkstätte. Beeindruckend. Der letzte Transport ging noch im März 1945 nach Theresienstadt.

Grunewald S-Bahn station, platform 17, known for the transport of Jews to Theresienstadt, Warsaw and Auschwitz. Thousands were transported from there during the Nazi era. And this track is now a memorial site. Impressive. The last transport left for Theresienstadt in March 1945.

Trotz des blöden Wetters war doch recht viel los im Grunewald: Familien, Jogger, Wanderer, Radfahrer. Unser Ziel ist der Teufelsberg. Die Abhörstation der Amerikaner. Vorher kommen wir an Berlins größtem Sandspielplatz vorbei – eine Sanddüne im Grunewald, die tatsächlich als Sandspielplatz genutzt wird.

Despite the bad weather, there was quite a lot going on in Grunewald: families, joggers, hikers, cyclists. Our destination is the Teufelsberg. The American listening station. Before we get there, we pass Berlin’s largest sand playground – a sand dune in the Grunewald forest that is actually used as a sand playground.

Am Teufelssee gibt es ein paar Mutige, die bereits ins kühle Nass springen. Wir laufen daran vorbei. Vielleicht nächsten Monat.

There are a few brave souls at Teufelssee who are already jumping into the cool water. We walk past them. Maybe next month.

Es geht steil den Teufelsberg hinauf. 120 m. Der höchste Berg Berlins, der nach dem 2. Weltkrieg künstlich aus Trümmerschutt aufgeschüttet wurde. Und das merkt man heute noch. Man läuft über Berlins Trümmer.

It’s a steep climb up the Teufelsberg. 120 metres. The highest mountain in Berlin, which was artificially heaped up from rubble after the Second World War. And you can still see it today. You walk over Berlin’s rubble.

Und nach dem Krieg wurde in den 50er Jahren die Abhörstation der Amis und Briten aufgebaut. Die riesigen weißen Radarkuppeln sind noch heute sichtbar, wenn auch zum großen Teil vom Vandalismus zerstört. Nach der Wende wurde das Ganze zu einem Lost Place, eine Mischung aus Art-Galerie und Aussichtspunkt.

And after the war, the American and British listening station was built in the 1950s. The huge white radar domes are still visible today, albeit largely destroyed by vandalism. After reunification, the whole thing became a lost place, a mixture of art gallery and viewpoint.

Für 12 € kann man sich auf dem Gelände austoben, auf die Abhörstation klettern, Kunstinstallationen bewundern und eine fantastische Aussicht auf die Stadt genießen.

For €12, you can let off steam on the grounds, climb up to the listening station, admire art installations and enjoy a fantastic view of the city.

Im Olympiastadion rumort es. Hertha spielt heute gegen Greuther Fürth gespielt und 1:0 gewonnen. Die Fangesänge begleiten uns noch auf dem Abstieg vom Teufelsberg und dem Aufstieg zum Drachenberg.

There’s a rumble in the Olympic Stadium. Hertha played against Greuther Fürth today and won 1:0. The fan chants accompany us on the descent from Teufelsberg and the ascent to Drachenberg.

Der Drachenberg ist nur 99 m hoch und ist ein natürlicher Hügel, kein Trümmerberg. Wie kommt dieser Hügel zu diesen Namen? Ganz einfach, er ist nicht bewaldet und bietet auf seinem Plateau eine wunderbare Möglichkeit, Drachen steigen zu lassen. Vor allem bei solchem Wetter wie heute.

The Drachenberg is only 99 metres high and is a natural hill, not a mountain of rubble. How did this hill get its name? Quite simply, it is not wooded and offers a wonderful opportunity to fly kites on its plateau. Especially in weather like today.

Und aufgepasst!!! Wer hier spazieren geht, sollte nicht unbedingt quer durch den Wald laufen. Der gesamte Wald ist von Mountainbike-Strecken durchzogen. Wir haben uns kurzzeitig auf eine solche verirrt. Zum Glück waren nicht viele Mountainbiker unterwegs.

And watch out!!! If you go for a walk here, you shouldn’t necessarily walk right through the forest. The entire forest is criss-crossed by mountain bike trails. We briefly got lost on one of them. Fortunately, there weren’t many mountain bikers out and about.

Nach ca. 4h und 9 km in den Beinen waren wir wieder in der ‚Zivilisation‘. Schnell zur S-Bahn, bevor das Herthaspiel abgepfiffen wird.

After about 4 hours and 9 km in our legs, we were back in ‚civilisation‘. Quickly to the S-Bahn before the whistle blows for the Hertha game.

Es tat gut. Und nächste Woche gibt es ausnahmsweise wieder einen Feiertag in Berlin. Doch dieser ist bereits reserviert für Korrekturen.

It felt good. And next week, for once, there will be another public holiday in Berlin. But this has already been reserved for corrections.
