A few weeks ago, I read the book that features this photograph on its cover: A Little Life. It moved me so deeply that I still haven’t been able to start another book since finishing it. The photograph is currently part of an exhibition at the Gropius Bau and is titled Orgasmic Man.

An expensive strawberry harvest from the pick-your-own field.

Sports Day at Kosmos School: My crazy class wins the basketball tournament and almost takes the badminton title too.

Weekend getaways in Mecklenburg: Schlemmin Castle vs. a Slube sleep pod in Neustrelitz.

Newest creations, this time something other than socks. And it’s project week at school: Hooked on the Cosmos. I’m trying to teach my kids how to crochet — in 41°C heat.
Between Report Card Stress and the Adriatic
How do I start writing again after such a long time? It feels like an eternity has passed since May and that weekend in Wrocław. And now it’s already summer vacation!
The time between May and July was anything but uneventful. Little weekend getaways to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, paddling on the Havel River, a bit of luxury and indulgence at Schlemmin Castle, or spending the night in a Slube (Sleep Tube) in Neustrelitz. All of it was about winding down and creating a few highlights after the demanding weeks at school and in teacher training. And this year, I didn’t even have any final exams or graduation papers to mark. Still, the last few weeks were exhausting: countless grade conferences, even a class conference during the very last week, project week, and excursions during the final days of school, all of which somehow had to be organized as well.
Even so, I don’t regret changing schools. It never gets boring. Almost every week there was some incident involving my “creatively challenging” students that had to be sorted out. It’s incredible that I made it through. Now they all have their report cards, and I have six weeks of peace and quiet. Hooray!!!
And now we’re on our way to Dubrovnik, Montenegro, and the island of Hvar. Three weeks of relaxing by the sea, adventures, and hopefully unforgettable experiences.
We’re still pretty tired. The alarm went off at 2:15 a.m. The first adventure didn’t take long, and the second followed immediately. We took the tram and the FEX airport train. No delays—if anything, we arrived far too early because the tram seems to run whenever it feels like it at that time of day. The crowd was a little strange, though. Alongside sleepy holidaymakers heading to the airport, the tram was packed with loud, hyper party people armed with beer bottles and surrounded by clouds of cannabis smoke. Either we’re getting old, our tolerance has changed, or we really are in desperate need of a vacation. Next time, we’ll just book an Uber.
Our flight goes via Munich to Dubrovnik. By around 11 a.m., we’ll be on the Adriatic coast. I’m already looking forward to sunshine, blue skies, the beach, the sea, and breathtaking sunsets.
See you later!
