Schon wieder Flughafen. Alicante. Wehmut.

Klingt doch prima! Dumm nur, dass die 17 € pro Person gelten. Also gleich das Doppelte.
Also kein Grund, mich weiter darüber zu ärgern.

Grey Is a Colour Too
Airport again. Alicante. That familiar feeling of sadness when a holiday comes to an end. Just one more hour until takeoff, heading back towards GREY, DARK GREY, COLD, but perhaps with a little bit of colour left.
I actually spent the last few days of my holiday doing what you’re supposed to do on holiday: relaxing and recovering. Giving my wounds a little time to heal. Although my feet were already itching to get moving again, and I would have loved to visit the lighthouse at Cabo de la Nao. But rocky coastlines do come with the risk of injuring yourself somewhere. And I’d really had enough of that for one holiday.
So I decided to take it easy. Chilling on the terrace until lunchtime, a bit of beach time and a stroll through Dénia.
There was still plenty I hadn’t seen in Dénia, and I was pleasantly surprised by its pretty little streets and alleyways. The so-called Ethnological Museum was quite interesting and, in places, rather amusing. All museums in Dénia are free, including this one. I couldn’t really make out any particular structure to the exhibition, though, and all the explanations were in Spanish, which unfortunately I don’t understand. Not even remotely.
But the building itself was worth visiting. Old staircases, high ceilings, almost a touch of Art Nouveau. Only the furniture and exhibits didn’t quite seem to fit the surroundings.
On the way back to our accommodation, I suddenly felt as though I were in California. The silhouette of the mountains against the setting sun. Absolutely beautiful! And all this at 6 p.m. Wintertime has arrived here too.
On the very last day, I decided to try another beach in Xàbia. It had looked rather nice in the pictures. Palm trees, sand and a beautiful blue sea. In reality, however, it turned out to be a complete tourist trap. Countless bars, restaurants, clothes shops and cheap Chinese stores. And, to top it all off, an excavator making a deafening racket while trying to clear some rocks from the shoreline. Well, forget that then!
To be fair, the beach near our accommodation wasn’t exactly any better. Mainly because of all the dogs being walked there, naturally without leads. Even though that’s strictly forbidden. But who cares?!
At least we treated ourselves to a seafood paella with black rice at a beachfront restaurant. The rice gets its black colour from squid ink. Looks a little unusual, but tastes delicious!
The price, however, was quite something. Tourists are cleverly misled by a rather confusing menu. Paella for a minimum of two people, with €17 written next to it. Sounds great! The only catch is that the €17 is per person. So twice the price. What a rip-off!
And that wasn’t the end of it. The car rental company also managed to squeeze some extra money out of us. For alleged damage we were supposed to have caused. Unfortunately, we hadn’t noticed it when we picked up the car in the dark. Oh well, luckily I have insurance. So there’s no point getting upset about it any further. At least that’s what I’m trying to tell myself.
Instead, I’d much rather enjoy the lovely memories and the relaxing effects of this week on the Costa Blanca for just a little longer.
Now I’m simply hoping that our flights home go smoothly, without any unexpected stopovers like the ones we had on the way here.
And the good news is that I still have a few days off before the usual madness starts all over again.
Perhaps there’ll still be a little colour waiting for me back home after all. And not just GREY and DARK GREY.
